Fruits & Vegetables?

Are any fruits and vegetables not allowed after surgery? Our 2-year-old son loves bananas, watermelon, canteloupe, grapes, kiwi, apples. Therefore, we always have them well stocked. Are these acceptable? As for veggies, what are we allowed to eat? Green beans, corn (both off and on the cob), salads, carrots, cucumbers, green peppers is what we stock at home. Again, my son loves these (except the salad, that's mine). Michelle

Michelle- I don't know of any fruits or vegetables that are forbidden after surgery. It just depends on your situation and if you can tolorate them. I think most of us can eat fruits and vegy's but, there are a few who can't tolorate the sugars in fruit even though they are natural sugars. Some can't tolorate salad. Everyone is different so, you won't really know until you try it for yourself. So far, I haven't found any fresh fruits or vegy's that bother me. Teri

Michelle - protein will be your primary source of nutrition. My NUT told me if I could manage to get in my protein, then I could hit the veges .... green kind. Yellow is higher in carbs I believe. Fruits you won't probably won't have room for and are high in sugar - even if natural. Later you may or may not tolerate fruit. But it's going to be all protein and water at the beginning. What protein you don't get in will show up in hair loss 3 months down the road. Sometimes I do hard green veges for snacks (like celery, cucumbers etc) but remember, sauces are extra fats/calories/carbs that your body doensn't need to function. All of us need a little fat in our diets - good fats (like I cook with olive oil occasionally) but you need to learn to look at food as a fuel/nurishment for your body rather than an activity/hobby (eating) which many of us coming into thhis surgery do. I know that some here can tolerate fresh fruits but realize they get their protein in first. Sheryl In the Zoo

Hello there, Everyone is different for a list of do's and don'ts contact your nut... I can tolerate fruits and Veggies I pretty much live on Cucumbers, tomatoes and watermelon.. I get my protein first and foremost but then I get the others.. I can not do corn, the husk it has its very painful, green beans are good if they are low in sodium (for me) and I prepare them for myself.. I can do pineapple grapes (peeled because of the skin) strawberries, there is natural sugar in them so I make sure my sugar only comes from natural fruits and have ZERO sugar from anything else.. But you must remember that everyone os different and what works for me could send you into a virtual Dumping nightmare.. So talk it over with your nut, and then remember that protein must always come first... (((HUGS))) Dori
