Anyone here sleeved in Mexico on the same day as their spouse? Just wondering, my husband and I are planning for May of this year. Wanted to know what it was like for anyone else, or do you think this is a terrible idea?

I've been researching doctors and hospitals in Mexico for quite some time now; I'm going through the selection process; reading reviews, etc. I checked Dr. Alejandro Lopez's credentials and I can tell he's quite experienced. I've talked and emailed to Dr. Lopez's patient coordinator and he's been real helpful and friendly, quite a doll. I liked very much the facilities on the pictures I saw, they seem very clean and modern almost like I picture a spa.
I like that I can have the operation in Tijuana Mexico, so close to San Diego California. I'm going in for a Gastric Sleeve Surgery and so far really leaning toward having Dr. Lopez perform my surgery; whenever I contact his office I feel like they really care about me and that everyone truly is doing their best for me to have a good experience and a successful weight loss journey you know? Looking at other doctors I found that many of them offer the same surgery at way lower prices, which makes me think they don't have as much experience or that they carry a lot of hidden extra costs. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks so much for your answering my question. I feel better now and am sure that I will get help in Canada if I need it!
What kind of support system (dietitian, fitness trainer, therapist etc) did your husband have (other than you of course) after returning home?
I am a little worried of being alone.....
Hi - we live in Newfoundland. My husband had VSG in Mexico in 2013. Canada has Universal Health Care - and if you are eligible for OHIP now - there is no reason why they would not cover any surgery related problems. It was never a concern of ours. The only thing I would make sure of is that your primary care physician - or family doctor, or whoever looks after your day to day regular health - be aware that you are having surgery and be on board so that you can get your blood work checked post op every now and then. Anything worrisome that you figure requires a hospital visit- head to your local ER. Or any ER in Canada - they won't refuse you. The Health Care System in the US for the most part is self pay (I think) - unlike ours that is funded through our tax dollars. Therefore - you do hear stories of physicians not wanting to have anything to do with patients who are post bariatric surgery that run into problems. It's not a surgery they did and probably are not familiar with it, and the last thing they want to do is get mixed up in a problem they didn't create. Lawsuits etc etc. My understanding of health care in the US is that if you have no health care insurance and run into a problem - you are pretty much certain to end up at one of the PUBLIC Hospitals. They have to care for everyone. However - public hospitals in the US are not plentiful. In a life or death situation in the US - if you end up in ANY emergency room - they HAVE to see you and at least stabilize you if possible. But following that - if you have no health insurance and still need further care - it's off to a public hospital you go. I do stand to be corrected - if the process is different in the US from what I have said - PLEASE correct me. We are very lucky in Canada to have the health care that we do! Good luck!
Hello,
I just started my journey and find the forum very helpful.
I do live in Ontario and I am covered by OHIP, which would actually cover the costs for WLS, but the wait time is around 1.5 years and the criteria to qualify are pretty high. Furthermore I am not willing to let someone else decide my future.
Hence I am researching WLS in Mexico and my only concern is: if something goes wrong after I return to Ontario, will OHIP cover theses expenses?
Sorry this took me so long to reply. I did meet Dr. Rodriguez as well. I believe they are a team. He was very nice. I have heard good things about him. My family was so worried about me! My pastor's wife went with me, she takes care of people as a job, so I was blessed to have her. I was very pleased with my doctors. It is a little hard to communicate with the nurses because I don't know Spanish, but not bad, because you have other people that speak English that come to see you. The doctors know English very well. The hospital was very clean. We felt very safe from the beginning. I flew in on Dec. 15, 2014 and came home on December 18,2014. I made sure and bought the inflammation pain medication they offered me to come home with, even though I didn't have any pain. I took them until a few days after I got home. I have had no problems. Let me know if you have any more questions I will be happy to answer them.

Still having problems with taking the vitamins so I decided that today was the day to try some thing else.
I went to wall-greens and bought some women gummys, and, they went down pretty well i even liked the flavor.
I have been getting off my butt and I do go walk even when it is raining.
First i thought how am I going to walk in the rain but some one told me that I not going to melt.
So I felt so stupid. All I was doing was making excuses not to keep up with my daily exercise.
It is just so hard at times that all we can do is just make excuses.
I am on my 7th week and the only real problem is the vitamins and it is nit even a real problem at all.
All I had to do is find some kind of vitamins that worked for me, just like what we half to do when we decide in WLS.
We half to find what works best for our bodies I am so glad that I found the right one for me.
I decided to get the gastric sleeve I was a self payed patient and went to Mexico.
I was scared about Mexico all the stories people tell and they know some one that some thing bad has happen to them because they went to Mexico.
Than I stop and thought to my self all kinds of stuff happen every where we just here more stuff about other countries for the fact that know body wants to admit the us Americans are also bad people and us Americans also do bad ****
So I decided that since I did not have the money to get the WLS in the states I was going to look into getting WLS in Mexico
I found a lot of different doctors in Tijuana and did a whole lot of research on every doctor.
I found really good ones and I found ones that I thought I was not going to like to much.
Than I puled a list up on the doctors that I wanted to do my WLS and one by one went down the list to pick the best one for me.
I decided that Dr.Quinones was perfect because I had read that he was a Proctor for Johnson an Johonson, General for Tijuana Hospital and that he had done residence surgery in the U.S. so that made me feel like I was going to have surgery by a doctor from the U.S.
Their are a lot of good doctors in Mexico and any where we go their will be good and bad.
It is our job to find who is best for us, and I really liked the job that Sergio did on me he s a great doctor.
I had no complications what so ever and I was not in as much pain as some people make it out to be.
It does hurt but it is the gas pain that make us feel uncomfortable.
I had a little heartburn and headaches after words but they went away pretty fast within a week or 2.
I find it so interesting how far I have come, I have lost 35 lbs from the last time I weighed my self.
I am getting down the food pretty well I find it easier to eat or drink warm food and drinks.
I hope some of you like my Blogs but I like to do it for me so a year from now I can go back and read all that I have went through.
I will keep in touch and let you all know how I am doing.
I have been researching and compiling info for my 23yo daughter and myself. Any information you can PM me as far as contact info and do's and dont's would greatly be appreciated. Congratulations on your success.
My mom is scared of the world and everything in it. If it doesn't fit in her tight knit republican ideas of what safety and propriety are, then she will naysay everything. I'm used to it after 40 years of it. I'm just surprised she agreed to board a plane (don't forget, the terrorists are out to get her) and come to florida to watch my son for 3 days. He's 8, so it's not exactly that difficult, but she agreed and I'm grateful for that.
Tummy tucks sound fabulous. How much are those starting? Is anyone financing you? I doubt I'll have the luxury of getting that done, but I said the same thing about weight loss surgery.
I'm wondering what vitamins to take as well. I would prefer something liquid or sublingual (under the tongue) rather than any pills. Even before sugery, pills make my stomach upset.
Can anyone recommend a good vitamin, preferably without sugar and fillers, to take?
