Info on Hair Loss Issues
Hi all!
We have seen the topic of hair loss come up a number of times over the years. To help, use this link http://familydoctor.org/081.xml to the American Academy of Family Physicians that is a broad overview of causes and remedies.
I always profess sharing experience, not advice giving on this site, BUT, I have read so much on this topic in pursuit of helping our members that I will share what I have learned and hope it will help.
Other than the obvious cause attributed to insufficient protein which all WLS patients are warned about, stress and hormonal fluctuations in women seem to be the most likely culprits.
Virtually every article and research paper on the topic of female hair loss names stress, surgery and childbirth as the primary causes of sudden hair loss.
WLS patients have had enormous levels of stress
WLS patients have undergone surgery
As our bodies readjust after surgery, hormonal fluctuations are common
WLS patients struggle to get enough fluids each day
WLS patients struggle to accurately and consistently take in enough protein each day
So now that we have established that WLS patients (especially female) are perfect candidates for sudden hair loss, what can be done.
1) Make and appointment with your primary physician to discuss the issue so that he/she can determine if there may be some other possible cause that requires attention.
2) Make an appointment with your nutritionist with a good eating record of 5 - 10 days to discuss protein levels
3) Make absolutely sure you are ingesting the number of grams of protein recommended to you after surgery. DON'T SKIMP
4) Increase your water consumption by 150%. Drink till you pee. This helps much more than hair, it makes everything work better
5) Meditate - make and appointment with your therapist to discuss stress issues and management techniques. Excessive worrying and stress about hair loss will only compound the problem. Take care of yourself with at least 20 minutes of real quiet time a day to give your spirit and brain a rest.
6) Commit to exercise every day for 30 minutes for 30 days. Exercise will charge your metabolism, fueling better operation of all your body's systems. It is also an additional opportunity to "tune out" the rest of the world and focus on being good to yourself.
Of course, I am not a doctor, or nutritionist, or medically trained in any way. That is why my two first recommendations are to meet with trained professionals. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you see your doctor ASAP. I have only touched on the obvious and most common causes for WLS patients. Always touch base with your professional team to stay ahead of negative health.
These are the best thoughts I can offer. I hope it helps. The good news is, if your causes are listed above and you do take corrective measures, the loss is temporary and the hair will grow back. Do nothing, or continue to to the same things and, well..... Good Luck!
All the best,
Jack
