I've jumped all the hoops now and passed. I'm just waiting for the surgeons appointment date and then have to wait for State approval through Maine Care. Does anyone know how long that will take? I'm excited but also scared. doubting now a bit. Is that normal? HELP Now I'm getting worried about the mortality thing. It has never bothered me before. Also is it right or wrong for me? I thought I had all these issues worked through and answered. I've been at peace about it all until just this week. I am having Dr. Clough do my Gastric bypass OPEN. thats the only thing my insurance covers. My family is supportive of me One Hundred Percent on this. THANKS and God Bless everyone who is also waiting for their surgery date or approval and also for those who have gone through the surgery and are only in the first month. Everyone is warning me about how hard and awful the first month will be like. By everyone I mean friends not people who have actually gone through this. LONI

Loni, I had my gastric bypass surgery in June 2003.....From the time that I saw Dr. Clough to my actual date of surgery it was 2 months..... that was over 2 years ago so the time may be more or less now.........I think it is normal at some point to think about the risk of death.......I think that it is very important to think that everything is going to go smoothly but on the other hand also to think about what you would do if there were complications........the first month is very difficult as you are so use to eating larger portions of anything you want and all of a sudden you can only have a limited number of foods and in small quantities.....The first 6 months after surgery are difficult your body is adjusting to the changes and you are learning to read the signs your body is giving you in regards to what you can and cannot tolerate...... even now over 2.5 years later there are days that I can eat things and next time I have a certain item I may not be able to tolerate it.....you learn though after the first few mouthfuls if you are going to tolerate something or not...I have had many complications (hospital admission 8 days after surgery for nausea, vomiting and dehydration, discharge from hospital for less than 12 hours then readmitted for bowel obstruction which required surgery 13 days after original surgery, kidney stone 1 month after sugery which required surgery, esophageal stricture 6 months after surgery requiring dilation, hernia requiring additional surgery 1 year after original surgery and I have just had additional hernia surgery for 5 hernias 2.5 years after my bypass)......Even with these complications I would have the bypass again in a minute....If you have any questions feel free to contact me..........Marcia

WOW Marcia did you ever have alot of problems. I have talked to quite a few people who have had this and not very many have had the problems that you have had. I'm sorry for all your problems. I feel very confident that I will not have problems like that. The Lord Jesus is watching out for me and i've prayed that HE either open or close the doors for me on this WLS and the doors are wide open so far. I've jumped through all their hoops and now I have my appointment with my surgeon this coming Monday, Jan 23rd. When we went to orientation Lynn told us that we could expect to be scheduled for surgery by end of February if we have not had any complications or set backs. I've been flying through all the sceduled appointments with no problems and passed each thing. So I am expecting that sometime in March I should have my surgery. I want to be able to get through it and be able to get out and walk come spring and start getting my yard work and gardening going and feeling better health wise and weight wise. I know it will be rough the first month and also the first 6 months but not that bad or no one would ever have it done. I recieve good reports from just about everyone who has had this and they would do it again without hesitation. I"m praying I will feel that way too and be able to encourage others Post-OP. Thanks Marcia for your comments and God Bless.
