Hospital Stay
I will be traveling from Portland to Bangor for my surgery, we are coming up the night before so we can be there early Tuesday am. I was wondering how many nights I should reserve the hotel room for my husband. I'm having open RNY and I know they said 3-5 day's, does this include the day of surgery? If anyone has recently had open RNY could you let me know how long you were in for.
I also heard that many people start thier menstral cycle a couple of days post-op, do I need to bring my own pads?
Hi Terri,
We had to stay the night before surgery as well being from way northern Maine. I reserved a hotel room for my husband for 3 nights not including the room that we had used the night before. Unfortunately, I was not supposed to start my menstral cycle until 2 weeks post op but as luck would have it as I was doing my walk around the ward I felt something sticky running down my leg. They say that starting your cycle immediately post op is normal. Let me tell you that they have these huge pads that even if you bled out a couple of pints you would never have to change it, so I wouldn't suggest you bring any of your own. Now, the underwear is a different story. I had only brought a couple of pairs because they don't have you wear any after the surgery. After soaking through my two pairs they put on these horrendous fish net undies that were the most uncomfortable things that you could imagine. I would suggest that maybe you bring some extra underwear. I wish you the very best of luck with your surgery and please, please keep us posted as to how you are recovering. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you Terri

My hub stayed in my room with me, I was there for 3 nights. Well, he stayed 2 nights, I told him to go home the 2nd night because I didnt want the kids to worry.
I started my period the day after surgery. They gave me the huge pads and the funny panties. To me this was nothing since I had to wear them 18 months before when I had given birth to my twins. They werent that big a deal really. I just felt funny the first time I had to ask for them and I know the CNA felt bad that they were so huge. I knew it could happen but took the chance. Oh well. Live and learn.
Good luck!!!
