Has anyone had any issues with Anthem with regard to pre-op treatment. I've been to see the nutritionist (1st visit) and Anthem is saying that this is not a covered expense due to the fact that it is related to weight loss. I spoke with the cs rep and she indicated that the surgery itself is covered, but nothing else. I asked for a copy of what she was reading and she said she would send me the Anthem Medical Policy. Certainly, I see in the policy that the gastric bypass appears to be covered if it is medically necessary, but I do not see anything relating to whether or not the pre-op stuff is covered. If anyone has any insight, recommendations, etc. I would appreciate it very much. I meet with the surgeon on 05/14/04 and I want to make sure that this is not going to be a problem.

Okay - so the picture didn't quite work - I was going for the rolling eyes emoticon. Oh well.

I have BC/BS Fed, the card has the word Anthem on it, but I have never called it that. Anyway, my insurance covered it all because it was part of the "things" my surgeon required. Of course I do have PPO, that could make a difference, I never need referrals. Good luck! Theresa

Hi Elizabeth, I have Anthem BC/BS and the only pre-op requirement I had was to see a nutritionist. I did need a referral but in addition to the surgery, they put down that I had high blood pressure, anemia, etc. and Anthem covered it fine. They also covered visits post op with the nutristionist. Hope this helps. Sue
