I forgot the word about protein lol...

I'm a bonehead... So about protein, I have been lurking around the "main" messageboard and have been noticing that people are wild about protein. Like powders, bars, pills, everything and anything protein. Which is nuts as far as what Dayna says...so what's up with that?? She says to get enough protein (at 6 months post op and after) you only need 2oz at each meal and maybe some as a snack. She said that for every gram of protein you get a gram of fat and 4 calories...so that doesn't do you much good for losing for those still trying to lose. Plus as long as you are doing weight bearing activities you don't need to worry too much about losing muscle. So actually doing the powders, bars etc on top of eating is just hindering peoples goals. I hear what she's saying. And I realize that everyone is different so if someone doesn't want to eat food they could have a shake or whatever but it just seems like the comercialization of gastric bypass has also led to a brainwash effect coming from protein supplement companies. Making post op's believe that they just have to use their products becuase they had surgery. When in fact you can get all you need from foods. Also depending on where you are post op or if you struggle to keep things down it may work out to have a shake but...the numbers I see for protein that people try to get is unreal. Like 80 grams of protein a day??? That's nuts. In the first two weeks or so post op having high protein is needed for help with recovery but at 6 months to a year and after it's just unrealistic. I don't think I know what my point is....I ramble too much. I guess the point is that those of us who have a nutritionist we might want to remember they went to school for this stuff...looking towards companies who want to see their product move would of course advise us that we NEED that protein powder would be silly. I'm not trying to be *****y or anything just something I was thinking about while laying in bed last night. Casey ps and I'm not directing this towards anyone on this board it's from the people on the "main" thing.

For the most part I agree with you. I think there are many people taking in too much protein. I do believe if you work out extra hard, like a couple of hours in the gym you do need more protein. Like all surgeons are different so are dieticians. I have seen people on the main message board say theirs have told them they do not need any protein and others have said they need over 100 grams. I trust Dayna and think she knows her stuff, but I also know I will not get enough protein in at meals. I skip breakfast and use the protein shake in place of it. I think I always will. If I did eat breakfast maybe I would not need it. This is just me. Of course the fact that I enjoy the Unjury doesn't help. Theresa

I totally hear what you are saying. You are so right. I guess it just nags at me. Things that shouldn't concern me tend to do that. For all the time when I didn't want breakfast I just didn't have anything, I'm a bad girl. Now I am actually hungry in the morning so that is buggin me out. But I am still so in love with food that having a shake doesn't appeal to me yet. Maybe when I get used to one type I could mix in with some fruit and stuff to make it more mealish. I haven't experimented yet... Casey
