I am having surgery with Dr. Aslam on January 30. I am wondering if I have to fast before the surgery. If so how long? I am so worried about my mouth and throat being very dry after surgery. Dr. Aslam does not let his patients take anything by mouth for a week. Does anyone have any suggestions for dry mouth or dry throat? I, also, am wondering how long we have to wait before we can travel and last but not least, how long before we can resume sexual relations? thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to answer.

I am really trying not to sound sarcastic here but... I really would hope your surgeons program would tell you all of that. In my experience at EMMC with Dr. Clough, when the nurses called to preregister me and all that they said when to stop eating and drinking. It was a matter of hours only. Don't pig out the day before surgery but you can still eat. ?????How can you not have anything by mouth for a week????? You need to drink. And you can eat. When I was in the hospital they serve ice chips for the first 24 hours. Then move to jello and yogurt. On the third day tuna, eggs etc. Then the same when you go home that third day. Then continue the soft protein diet for 2 weeks. After that we move on. Travel as long as you feel comfortable. You will have to ride home from the hospital right? Hold a small pillow over your incision to help you feel more comfortable. If you are traveling a long distance get out every hour and walk for 10 mins to avoid blood clots. Have sex when you are ready. Just take it easy. Goodluck and ask your surgeon important questions like this. That is why they're getting paid so darned much. Not that I mind putting my two cents but geesh you need to be informed by the people who are going to do your surgery. Casey
