Protein Drinks
Hi folks: I was five weeks post op yesterday and down 30 pounds. I need advice on protein drinks. I was drinking the Atkins Advantage Drink both the vanilla and chocolate. The last one I had(beginning of last week) I thought I would die drinking half of the drink. No, I did not drink quickly--sipped as instructed but it felt like a mini dumping experience. Felt weak, nauseous, light headed, cold and clammy. What else is out there? I have been counting my proteins mgs ever day--most days 65 or very close to it through food.
Today was a bad day. Had an emergency with my dog and had to rush to the vets to pick up pain meds. I grabbed a piece of string cheese(skim milk--mozerlla (sp?). Anyway ate it too quickly but did not notice anything until after I returned, took care of my dog, had my scrambled egg and then after that(maybe one hour) thought I would die.
Another experience with eating too fast(the old gulping thing). All the above symptoms--and really came close to vomiting--but burped instead.
So, after 5 weeks I continue to learn almost daily. The sugar free popsicles are wonderful---I have one--sometimes 2 a day. Also gives me some needed fluids and only 15 calories. Doing Ok--think I'll feel better when I return to work on Monday and start exercise. My plan is to take advantage of the three free months at the EMMC physical therapy on Union Street. I see Dr. Toder on Friday and should get the OK at that time to begin.
Well, I guess I needed to vent a little tonight--this new experience is a challenge every day. Not a bad challenge---I like being 30 pounds thinner--but a challenge to develop a new life style is a good challenge and the rewards will speak for themselves. Hope to see all of you on Wed. Jan 14 at 5:00.
Peace!
Jane
I use the unjury and swear by it. I love vanilla but for some reason am hooked on the chocolate, which is really ironic since I really do not care for chocolate.
I do use the vanilla but not that much in a drink, it is a tad on the sweet side. I use it in vanilla pudding a lot.
I also use the unflavored which is the closest I have come to finding anything unflavored yet. It goes great in broth, oatmeal and even mashed stuff.
Another big plus is that Jerome and Martha who you deal with at Unjury are fantastic people, always willing to go the extra length for customers.
The only downside is that you can only order it online. They ship it VERY fast and I have never had a trouble with it. I am now on an autoship with them so I do not have to keep placing an order.
1 scoop=20 grams of protein
3 carbs
2gr sugar
1= about $1 I use one scoop a day so it is very cost effective. I get the rest of my protein in food.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Congratulations on being 30 pounds down! That feeling you described-clammy, nauseus, lightheaded etc. is what isn commonly referred to as dumping. The first protein drink I drank and found edible was EAS Advant edge whey. I puchased it at WalMart. I would add ice and freeze half and eat the second half with a spoon. Since then I have found others I like better. I suggest ordering some samples. I have found Susan Maria's www.bariatriceating.com to have a nice selection and reasonable shipping costs. I also have a link to send away for some free samples http://www.molecularnutrition.net/free_stuff.htm I ordered mine a couple days ago and they arrived today! It is the Whey Fruity which alot of people are raving about. My nutritionist suggests a ratio of 20 grams protein per 110 calories as a guideline. I made a lot of snow cones at first to get my fluids in. It is tough, but every day gets easier. The only thing I have ever thrown up on is scrambled egg--twice! I ate too fast and too big I guess. One thing to keep in mind is if something gets stuck--Do not drink water as that is likely to make you vomit. Some people recommend drinking warm water with adolph's meat tenderizer to help flu**** out. Good luck, hope things get better! Lynda ME/FL
