Hi all,  It has been some time since I have been on this site.  I thought this would be the place to go with my issue.  So, I had Dr Aslam do my RNY 10 years ago and have not had any follow up since year 1. He has seemed to skip town and is now practicing medicine in Rumford now.  I have tried several times over that past few years to get an appointment to follow up with another surgeon but with a "fee" they won't see me.  So, this is where I need your help!  I know there are alot of you that has had Dr Aslam and I would like to know what your doing for follow up.

Thanks for your help!!

Hi Jan,

I don't like my program and have chose not to go back for followups. I took a list (that I got from Andrea U. on the RNY Board) to my PCP and she writes the lab slip. We look it over together and if I have any concerns I bring them up on the RNY board, there are some great people on there that have done a lot of research and know their stuff.

Did you go through EMMC? What didn't you like about them? I am currently going through that program. I would like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly.

Jeanine,

I didn't have my surgery with EMMC, I just moved to Maine about a year ago and started seeing Dr. Michelle Toder at EMMC and at first I was taken a back from her.  The people are nice but not what I am used to from my surgeon who did my surgery in Virginia.  Good luck :)

It's a great place to have your surgery, but my aftercare has not been stellar. At my one year I was having a lot of pain and Dr. Huang dismissed my pain and was disappointed in my weight loss.  Then they never scheduled my 18 month appointment, I had to call them three times. Then I got a nasty phone call saying that since they had not received my labs they were going to cancel my appointment, well I never got a lab slip or a phone call telling me I had an appiontment. So for personal reasons I have decided not to go back there. But I still would go there for surgery, they are the best around IMO.

I love   emmc program  they have been great with me

I know see dr  Haung and  he has been great too.

When you have see the dietician and the doctors you should always ask for a copy of all your labs.  I also have them sent to my pcp when i have them done.   You need to  have  vitamin  D  level checked
b 12 levels checked    Iron levels checked  and  then the regular things that they check for.

after two years  out you get checked  once a year.   And it is your choice  to have it done by your pcp if you want but you should always  send it to  the  program that you came out of too.

I know  that if you dont advocate for yourself  you will not always get  the best  quality care from any program or doctor out there.  I  am very lucky my doctor went to ohio at my six week checkup but  i do stay in touch with him and   he gives me  advice  when he thinks i need it.

But what i have learned from all of this is that if you dont follow the rules  at least  75 percent of the time you will not be successful in keeping the weight off or losing  it either.    I am exercising  more now  just to keep from gaining.    Zumba Zumba Zumba  and we all know how much i like to exercise i just found something that i  like.   If you dont  do anything  with follow up please get the labs done with your pcp  as  serious things can go wrong if you deficient in some of these vitamins.

Im a patient at EMMC, Dr Toder is amazing. At first, she seemed very standoffish to me, but I have genuinely NEEDED her a few times in recent months, and I am so sincerely grateful for her. when she needs to be stern and strict and push you, she does that. she has too many really important things to do to waste time. she can be short and sharp. BUT, there is a side of her that you get to know that is very caring and compassionate and genuine. she cares about her patients, she just doesnt have a lot of time to ***** foot around. Do all the things youre supposed to do, dont sabotage yourself, follow her instructions, and WANT THIS, and she will be the best ally you could ask for. Really. Im grateful for her and her knowledge right now, she just did surgery on me again last week for a bad gallbladder and a bile duct stone, she knows her stuff, and if she doesnt know it, she LEARNS it. She had to learn how to do ercp on a post-RNYer last week, and she did. Im grateful, she coulda sent me away to have it done. I trust her implicitly.
