I am wondering if anyone knows of any surgeons who will do the surgery w/o the patient having to go thru all the classes/sessions etc. first. My weight gain is due to medical issues, and some of my my specialists have urged me to try and find a surgeon who would just do the surgery.
Anyone???

I do not know anyone who does the surgery without having to go through classes/sessions nor would I recommend having surgery without attending classes and or sessions.  Attending the classes is one of the most important process of the "process".

I understand, but as I mentioned in my original post, my weight gain has nothing to do with eating/nutritional issues, but with medical/pain issues instead.

I so agree!  This surgery would scary to go through without the process. Good luck!

No good surgeon is going to do the surgery without you going through the process.  The process is the most important part.  You do need that time to wrap your head around the changes that you need to make.  It took me about 4 months from initial consult to surgery and that was fairly quick.  I would suggest starting the process by going to one or more informational seminars and talk to your PCP about getting a referral.  The sooner you start - the sooner you're done.  Good luck!

Hi   I also dont know of any surgeon that would do the surgery without going thru the process.  That would not be fair to the rest of the patients that have been following the rules.   In order for this process to work whether you gain is from other issues.  you still have to  eat the calories to gain the weight.  so  you need to practice  the new ways while you are waiting for surgery.   I dont know of any surgeon that will operate if you dont make an effort to lose weight.  Not that you have to lose much but you can not gain.  We all were dissappointed when we found out the wait was  longer than we would of liked it  but it is also an important part of the  process.  I wish you luck on your journey. and hope you find a solution.

No, I am not eating the calories to gain the weight. As a matter of fact, I  eat approx. 1000 calories a day, at the very most. My systems became all messed up several years ago. I LOST 48 pounds being pregnant with twins, eating like a the traditional pregnant woman!  The doctors could not explain it. I gain weight b/c my pain and medical issues are so significant that I have trouble moving much. There are very few things I can do for exercise, except for swimming.
I think people have to adjust after almost any surgery.  I understand what you are all saying, but I have to wonder if anyone understands what I am saying.

1) Have you ever gone to one of the informational meetings.  This is where you learn what the surgery does and how it affects your body and how your body reacts to the different options (it doesn't mater how much you eat or how much you do or do not exercise) you need to know this information.
2) If you are gaining weight and have a BMI in the 60's from eating 1000 calories a day ...what makes you or your Dr. think that surgery is going to work for you.
3) If you eat or drink at all...you need to learn how and what to eat /drink after surgery.  Its not a matter of just eating LESS and MAL ABSORPTION.  After surgery you need to not only eat different foods but also eat differently (chewing after surgery is much different than how you chew your food before surgery).  The classes explain this.  (Much smaller portions as well as protein requirements and chewing is ALL affected.
4) Surgery is not an easy fix it ....is a tool.... and frankly it doesn't matter how we got to the weight we are or were at  whether it was by eating too much or junk or not exercising or pain.  What matters is that you LEARN how to use the TOOL that is given to us.  THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO ATTEND THE CLASSES!!!!  THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE FOR!!    Sorry if I come across as being cross.

I understand what you are saying  but i also  know that  even swimming  is great exercise and  you will have to  find other forms of exercise for the tool to be successful.  The malabsorption issue of calories goes away after awhile but the malabsorption of  vitamins does not.  I would start with a referral and see.   You have to have a psych eval  a meeting with  a dietician and a meeting with a physical theripist  before you see the surgeon.  I  do wish you  luck in finding a  solution  I know we all struggled.   Have a great  weekend.

I bet you could do one of those "medical vacations" and get it done without all the preliminary stuff. But beware! There are reasons for the process any credible program has us go through to be sucessfull both for them and for us. ANY you are at great risk of blood clots having surgery away and flying home afterwards.

No surgeon wants to have uneducated, uninformed patients who can make or break their surgery depending on their actions.
As a patient, I wanted to know as much as I could. This is not reversible. It's forever!!!!

Take the time to work the program. You will be glad you did. There is much to learn. There is no easy fix. The programs require what they do to insure success.
