Greek Yogurt alternative

I like greek ygurt, but not the cost?

I  have a yogurt strainer- it's a fine plastic mesh strainer which holds 2 cups. The strainer is placed on top of a bowl to catch the whey which drips off. I bought a quart of LF plain yogurt, strained it overnight  (from 9PM to 6AM) in the refrigerator and then placed in a plastic container wth lid.. About 3/4 cup of liquid was strained off. The remaining yogurt is thicker and much like greek yogurt.
You could use a regular strainer and cheesecloth if you can't find the yogurt strainer

You could also strain the yogurt longer and make a thicker "cream cheese" type yogurt.

That's a great idea. I also have found the brand "Brown Cow" a few times and it is less than half the price.

I have also found by straining plain yogurt it makes a great sour cream tasting concoction.  I just do it for a couple hours for that though.  Put a little on mexican food and youd never know the difference.

I buy the Chobani brand at Hannaford and it costs 99 cents each.  The Fage is more expensive at like $1.79 or so.  The Chobani is definitely more expensive than the regular yogurt, but it's also about 3x the protein.  I have heard about straining the regular yogurt but I haven't tried it yet.  I'll have to try it soon.

What does this do to the calorie & protein count?  Anyone know?  I saw it on the foodnetwork and have wanted to try it.

I strained mine too long and it's like cheese now! LOL  I'll just do it overnight next time.
