Pouch Pain

Hi,

I saw Dr. Toder on Tuesday and she said that she thought that I was just getting too much acid in my pouch, but when I take Maalox, it only gives very temporary relief.  I don't want to be a hypochondriac, but when do you know that the discomfort and pain is too much?

I would call her back. You don't want to take any chances.  Maybe an ulcer?

I've had stomach ulcers and I typically do ok when I have food in my pouch and then, once it's empty, I get a dull, knawing ache just below my breast bone.  I kinda ignored it at first because, as you said, i didn't want to act like a hypochondriac, but I'm glad I called the surgeon back.  He put me on carafate (liquid) and back on the prevacid and I had almost immediate relief (at least the first time).  I've had two endoscopies, so they could look at my pouch and they did find a pretty nice sized ulcer during the first endoscopy.  BTW...if you are interested...I think I still have a picture of my ulcer on my profile.  Let me know if you want to see it and can't find it.

I would call the doc back just to be sure it's not an ulcer.  I'm not an expert, by any means, but pain that doesn't go away or that keeps coming back should probably be looked into a little more.  I don't think our pouches produce that much acid.  I'd call your surgeon!

Please let us  know what they say!

Hi Bev,

I hope they figure it out soon!  You can't be too careful, so don't feel that way. Especially, when you get pains in your pouch. Sounds like an ulcer.
