Things were going to well.
Today, Ray and I invited my mother and 2 of her grandchildren to go out to lunch with us and then to the local theater for a play of The Christmas Carol.
This was going to be the first time I tried to eat out since the surgery. Of course, everyone picked Chinese food. I didn't order anything, since I can eat so little, it didn't seem worth the cost. I just picked a few pieces of meat from others plates. Everything seemed to be going well. I took tiny bites and chewed until my jaw ached.
We left the restaurant to head for the theater and then it hit me. The pressure, the nausea, the build up of saliva....I barely made it the half mile to my apt. before I lost it in the parking lot there. Ray wouldn't go to the play without me, so Mom and the kids had to go without us.
This is the first time I have had something like this happen to me since the surgery. I know that it had to be because the food was too greasy, even though I tried to pick lean meats from the plates. How do you know what to eat at different restaurants. Do I have to eat at home for the rest of my life. I don't have a huge social life, but I would like to have a little bit of one. I know that food isn't the only way to socialize, but realistically, it is a part of everyone elses life.
What do you all do?

I'm so sorry Bev. How disappointing!
When I was about as far out as you, I had a lot of difficulties with vomitting. When I hit 5 weeks out, things got much better and I am currently 7 weeks out and am doing much, much better. I try to be really careful about what I eat or order. At a Chinese restaurant, you might want to try the egg drop soup. Usually the broth goes down all right and there is some good eggs with the protein. You just have to watch out for the sodium content.
Off topic, you're from Dover-Foxcroft? I was born in DF and most of my family is still there. I didn't know there was a showing of The Christmas Carol there. If it's still playing, I might bring my Grandmother.

Today was the last showing of it. I'm so sorry. My mother said that I really didn't miss much. She didn't seem impressed with the production.
I love egg drop soup, but I wasn't sure of the liquid with the solids in the that are in the soup. Do you just consume the broth with the egg? I will have to keep that in mind for the next time they take me there.
Thank you,
Bev

I was told by the NUT once you go to softs, egg drop soup is on the okay list. I asked about soups before I had my surgery because we pretty much live on them in the winter at my house. They told me they were fine. Sort of confusing though because we're told not to eat and drink at the same time, but soups are okay. Sort of sounds conflicting, huh? Anyway, the NUT (Tama) told me it was okay!
It DOES get better! I had Chinese food today too! I got a take out box from a buffet. My eyes are ALWAYS bigger than my stomach, but I ate protein first and it was GOOD! I try to stay away from the fried stuff and the "fattier" cuts, but I find the chicken and broccoli goes down pretty good as does the inside of an egg roll(gotta watch the sugar in the sauces too, if you dump!) . Early out, I would have stuck with the egg drop soup. I would drink the broth first then eat the eggs/solid stuff. I also would eat the crab legs and shrimp, if the buffet had it (we typically go to the buffet place around here so we have many choices! I have a card from my surgeon and they usually give me the kid's meal price instead of paying the adult price. It's not much of a price cut, but it helps!) As mentioned though, gotta watch that sodium content. I'm SURE I'll be up a couple of pounds tomorrow because of it! Oh well, it was worth it! I typically don't eat out much though, just because I like knowing what I'm eating.....makes it easier to log/track............Yup....19 months out and I STILL track my intake daily! I'm just weird that way!
Hope you are doing ok now! It stinks to get sick while you're out!

It does get better; You will learn where to eat and what agrees with you MOST times. Of course it can change over time.
Chinese restaurants- I order wonton soup or egg drop soup and an appetizer of steamed dumplings. DH and I order a bowl of soup and share the dumplings. I usually eat the middles out of the dumpings (a pork meat stuffing) . My other fav , and it may or may not be on the menu, request it anyways. Steamed veggies and a protein, either chicken, tofu or shrimp for me. You can also order an entree and ask them to make it with less oil. Other than that I find chinese food WAY to oily/greasy.
For me it's still an issue of how fast I eat. I have learned pretty much what to avoid when eating out. For me I am adding to the "avoid list" chicken wings- ate one at Sam's club yesterday- that was a mistake- too greasy even after peeling off the skin. Gosh, I hate that rumbly tummy, waves of hot/cold flashes something isn't right feeling.

well don't feel bad, I have the band and last night at supper (xmas party) I took a small plate of stuff that usually goes down well. OH< NOOO< I was fine, then took a stupid little chocolate kiss and everything stopped.... OUch, spent the next 20 mins, throwing up in the bathroom. I NEVER throw up. probalby 2 times in 20 months. I was fine after, danced, talked had a great night, just never know. just play it safe. I had a beer before I ate and I think the carbonation kicked up after I ate. OUCH>>> YOU will learn your own body, eveyone is different.
well i have eaten chiness and didnt have any problems, but i dont have meny problems with any thing any more. I still can only eat 3-4 oz of food at a time at 13 weeks out. I am glad i can still only handle small portions because i dont seem to dump! I had a lot of problems with things getting stuck! maybe you didnt chew well enough and it was not actually dumping. I get chicken and brocoli, steamed dumplings, rice noodles, sushi, wonton soup, egg drop soup, coconut shrimp (not that great for you), beef stir frie. not all at once lol!
