Those stupid school apple laptops
So my son tells me last week his laptop fell off his desk by accident. I don't really think anything of it. So today I get a call from the assistant principal that we are responsible and have to pay $250 for the repairs. No insurance on them. I knew we were responsible for any damage or loss that occurred while he had the laptop at home. But I am responisble for acciendents at school. And he can't have a laptop until we pay for the the repair bill first. So they require the kids to have them and we are stuck paying for it. I am so mad and upset right now. I can't afford that especially right before christmas. So they offer payment arrangements or he can do community service. AS IF!!!! Why should he have to do community service for an accident!!!!
I so hate the schools sometimes!!!!! They give laptops to 12-14 year olds and expect no accidents to happen?????? I bet most parents are unaware of this.

I have to call the assist. principal back today. I found some of the paperwork online and it says there is a $100 deductible that we have to pay or repairs up to $100. And to make matters worse it was not his fault. He and some classmates were picking up their things because their teacher needed to leave so they had to move to another classroom. One of his classmates bumped the table and that is how it fell off. So I need to call and agrue with her again today. Wish me luck
I am the MLTI teacher leader at my school and from what your saying, it sounds like accidental damage. The state has a clause for accidental damage and students and parents are not supposed to be responsible for it. Each school has what's called a "buffer pool" of spare laptops that they can draw from in case of accidental damage.
In our school, we have a rule that if you stand up from your desk for any reason, you're supposed to shut the "lid" on your computer so it doesn't get bumped or knocked over accidentally. That's the only thing that I could think of that your son might have done wrong and even that is questionable. I would definitely pursue this.
