hi all...just joined today to be able to chat it up with some others that have had the lap gastric bypass.   I had mine on 11/18/09 and obviously still in post op stage.  Cant seem to get an appetite for anything, its more a texture thing right now.  No drinks taste good, no soups, nothing....I have to force myself to drink the EAS drinks because it has 42 grams of protein, just so I know Im getting something in me for the day.  I hate to even drink water right now too.   Did any of you guys have this same situation?

Yes you are normal   The hardest challenge you have right now is to get your fluid in and your protein.  The wonder of gastric bypass is that alot of us do not have an appetite for  our old comfort foods.
Water  can taste tinny  I had to  use crystle lite watered down for a couple of weeks.

make sure you have  a couple of protein shakes a day  also try adding protein pudding   for  something different

I  still use   ovaltine,  unjury and milk for my protein shakes and i do  still do them when i think my protein level is not where it should be.

Take this time to reflect on  how great it is not to  want all those foods that caused the problem to begin with.  We still have head hunger and have to get that under control.   They did not operate on our  head.

You are doing  great!!!  Take care and   stay in touch

thanks for responding Patty....didnt know if my plea would fall on deaf ears.   I have never heard of unjury ... where do you get that?  taste like the others or have different flavors?  im tired of choc & vanilla, i think thats what the problem is.   i just got some crystal lite yesterday, so i will try that today with the water situation.   i am able to tolerate tomatoe soup and taking advantage of that one when i can lol
i was able to get about 4 hrs sleep last night...my back is killing me from not being able to roll over  =)

thanks again, take care and i see you dont have far to go ... so good luck !!

I think you are very normal.  I remember just doing the shakes at certain times of day because I was supposed to. I didn't care about food at all.  I have my appetite back now, but it's for different things than it used to be.  Last night I had the munchies so I mixed up some tuna w/some light mayo and ate it.  Before it would have been crackers, chips, you name it.

its so nice to know that my feelings/symptoms are not just in my head.    im missing the chew factor right now, needs something to nibble....when do you think i could start gnawing on some soft cheese or scrambled eggs?

It does get better and the appetite typically does improve with time.  I know, early on, I had a hard time with water too.  I had to have some kind of flavor to be able to get it into me!  Just remember that your fluids and protein are almost like a medicine.....you HAVE to get them in or you WILL get sick.  Try different flavors (fruity, chocolately, vanilla, salty ie: Unjury chicken soup flavor....that was my life saver early out!)  As your body goes through ketosis, your tastes will change and then they'll change some more!  If you have access to different protein samples, that's what I would use instead of buying huge tubs of protein powders.  I know our nut has samples that she gives out to patients so they can try different flavors before buying.

Just keep your "eye on the prize".......A HEALTHIER YOU!   You can do it!  We'll help any way that we can!
