Why not me?

So, I'm wondering why it is that my surgery center doesn't participate in the 2 week liquid diet pre-op extravaganza!  I understand that it helps to shrink your liver which makes the operation easier and safer.  I know that Dr. Loggins requires a minimum 5 percent weight loss prior to surgery and if you haven't met that goal they put you on a liquid diet.  Is it correct to assume that if you lose 5 percent of your body weight your liver is sufficiently shrunk?

Don't get me wrong, I hear everyone complaining about how awful the diet is and I'm thoroughly enjoying my last days of eating regularly but I just want to be sure that I'm doing everything I can to ensure a safe and successful surgery.  I totally trust my surgeoon of course and I'm sure there must be a rhyme to each reasoning but I was hoping someone could enlighten me!!!

I have 11 days to go....I'm not sleeping that well and I come up with all sorts of questions while I'm trying to fall asleep.  Did that happen to you all?

Thanks everyone, once again all of your posts are so helpful

I asked my nut. This is what she told me about my program which does 2 weeks liquid proteins pre-op
My program used to require the prescribed % weight loss prior to surgery. Most people failed.
They find that more are successfull with some weight loss during pre-op months of the program and then liquid diet for 2 weeks pre-op

I think the 5-10% weight loss is sufficient, lots of other dr's dont' require that, so then turn to the 2 week liq. diet.  If you would feel safer, do it.  I'm sure the extra weight loss isnt' going to hurt at all.  PLUS< you have the lovely "CLeansing" Dr. L requires and not other dr's.  so you can look forward to that.

Every program is different, but I think it's safe to say that they know what they are doing for the most part.  I'm sure if you wanted to do that liquid diet there wouldn't be any objections... LOL  Good luck and spend your next few weeks getting yourself ready for your new life!

I had many questions before surgery and buyer's remorse after surgery. I think that is normal.

Like everyone before me said, all programs are a little different.  Be glad you don't have to do the 2 weeks, towards the end I was going a little insane (ok, a LOT insane).  A lot of things will go through your mind in the next 11 days, make sure to post your questions, comments, etc.  It helps to keep you sane.  Best of luck for your surgery!
