Trouble getting all my protein 1 wk post-op

 Hey everyone,

Last week I posted that I was having severe nausea probs after returning home from surgery. The smell of my protein powders and drinks is making me gag so bad! Has anyone else run into this problem post surgery? My sense of smell has gone haywire and getting the min of 60 g protein is difficult. I've had to be very inventive, and if something registers as the slightest bit odd-smelling, forget it, it's NOT going down. I'm doing okay with liquids. I know this is crazy, but I keep worrying that I'm going to get into "trouble" at my 10-day appointment, but I am honestly doing the best I can. I came up with my own recipe for dinner tonight--"egg-drop soup". I just brought chicken broth to a boil and drop a small scrambled uncooked egg into it. Eggs are not supposed to me on the docket for a week or so, but I am scared of not getting the proper protein. Any stories/suggestions from anyone?

You  are doing great.    At this stage of the game  it is more important to get the liquids in  and try to get the protein in.   You are healing  at this point and  as you say everything is haywire.
You are not going to get in trouble   this early out.     Try   strained  soups  and yogurts  The greek yogurts have   a lot more protein in them    name brand  fage  and okyios   try  puddings   with  unflavored  protein powder in it  I  could do plain yogurt  with spenda in it.  But rmember you are  still healing so  it is more important to get the liquid in.   Milk if you can tolarate it has good protein.
Take care you are doing great!!!!

Someone here suggested a sippy cup, it works quite well. I just make sure I don't breathe in while taking my sip and wait until the cup is far enough away, you can't taste the powder, just the smell.... yuck.  Also try different kinds, so far I really like the nectar the best, has no flavor and very little smell. But everyone is different.  But definately get tha****er in, you can go a long time without food/protein, but you will dehydrate quickly withou****er.

I'd say try the sippy cup too......cover the smell and it might not seem as bad.  Early out, I used the protein bullets REALLY iced and watered down.  (It's not the "best" type of protein, but at least it's something!)   Try mixing in some of the sugar free syrups to "hide" the smell and taste and plain ole milk has some pretty good protein numbers too (I use the Hood calorie countdown fat free milk......8g of protein in 8ounces and only 45 calories........it tastes like fat free milk, to me, at least).

It WILL get better!  Good luck!

I had a hard time as well especially the first couple weeks.  Be careful about combining to many different foods . Just in case you have developed an intolerance to one of the ingredients. I used to warm beef or chicken broth and add non fat dried milk to up the protein it wasn't bad. I never found a unflavored protein powder I could stand.
They have lactose free Muscle Milk that tastes pretty good and the smell isn't to bad. Protein is high calories and sugar low.
Good Luck with finding something that will work for you. Oh I used to mix my protein shakes and then put them in popsicle makers when frozen the smell was less.

Thanks for the suggestions...my first full day home I was a protein/fluids MACHINE, and it just crashed from there.

I think I may go get some sippy cups..do you mean the unspillable kind, or ones where it will just flow out when tipped?

I have to say, I have tried a bout everything from Dr. Loggins' literature and tha you guys suggested, and truly, one wiff is all I need to know if I'm going to be able to get it down. Does the smell thing settle out? Even the perfume I've used since high school stinks to me right now. I was looking at a MAGAZINE yesterday, and the smell of the new pages had me gagging. How discouraging! I know fluids are most important, so that's what I've been pushing most.

I used the protein bullets grape ones with a sugar free kool aid single added to a 24 oz water bottle. It was the protein drink I could stand.

Yes  your tastes will change  sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse.  I had a hard time with water tasting like  metal  so it was a few weeks before i could drink it plain again.

Take care

You also might try the protein bullets.  I found out they sell them at wal-mart (at least the one here near me in Scarborough)  They look like they are in a test tube and kind of like liquid jello. You can also get them online, although they are a bit expensive.  www.profect.com
