So i've been having flem issues for years and years, it keeps me awake at night, my throat gets all tight.  funny is my whole family (mom,Dad, sister and brother) are all like this.  Anyway.  since my last fil, I am realizing, water isn't going down good, my band is GURGLing to beat the band.  and I'm waking up, almost clogged up and can't breath.  so today I got some Muculex. wow, what a difference.  I fell asleep and breathed so beautifully, well, till about 12:00 and it happend again.  so, I think I need to go see an alergist.  this might be affected the outcome of this band.  that is why water isnt' going down, my band is getting plugged up with this crap.  so, my question is do i need a referal to an alergist? or can I just call one and go see him.  does dr. Loggin's need to be involved, should I call him?  just dont' want to bother all the dr. if I can just do this alone.  also, this Mucelex, it says to take only for 3 days, so I want to make sure I don't do anything wrong.  I want to know why this is building up like this. HMMM???  this is so weird I can hear it moving around in my pouch and stomach. mabye that is why I can't take my pill it won't go thru.

Good Morning  Chery

Most insurances  if you have a primary care physician   want a  referral from them.
So i would check with  pcp and see  who they would referr you too and if you have a different choice have them get an appointment for you.    But some insuances  dont require a  referral so i guess it depends if you needed one for  wls  then you probably need one for  an allergist.

Have a great day!!!

I can tell you that most most insurances, you'll need a referral, but from your primary care physician. I can tell personally, that if you have CIGNA, you can see a specialist without a referral. Call your insurance for sure so you don't get stuck paying the bill!!!

That's weird that you brought that up because I too have been having a lot of mucus build up since my RNY surgery, usually in the mornings after I've been up for a few hours.  I'm already on seasonal allergy meds but it doesn't seem to help.  I think I need to get some form of sublingual med like allevert or something.

As for a referral, yes you need to get one from your primary to see a specialist unless you know you can self refer.

i just called my pcp, and i've got an appt. for monday morning.  I am not sure if he will just prescribe something for me or send me to an alergy specialist.  I'd rather just he do it.  althought it is annoying and bad at night I feel fine during the day and don't feel like its that big of an issue.  the Band is what is making it worse right now.  I just need something other then a pill tho. I will ask about sublingual.  thank you all for listening to my gross problem, but if helps someone else why not save them time and pain.

It's good that you made the appointment. Believe it or not, extensive allergies are the reason I opted for the RNY and not the Lap Band. I don't say that to scare you; I mean, you've made it a year. People with existing allergies can be prone to developing new ones, especially if you are in constant contact with the trigger. But it also could very well be seasonal. As hard as it may be to do, don't take the Mucinex or other allergy meds for a couple days prior to your appointment, because it could mask your allergy if there is one. Kudos for you for even thinking of the possibility of a connection! Whatever happens, it's going to be okay! Your doctor will likely already think of this, but you could ask for a "rasping test" in addition to whatever else he may be planning. What that is, is a blood test to tell if your particular blood is carrying antibodies to the substance that the Lap Band is made of, indication an allergic reaction. That's how I discovered for sure that I was allergic to a medication. Take care, and let us know.

no connection or reaction to the band, I"Ve ALways had this problem as with my whole family (mom sister brother)  but, I"ve never even told dr. before or had to take meds.  probably never had the issues cause the mucus flowed easier, now the band is holding it up. and causeing problems when I lay down.  I'm fine during the day.
