Protien Shakes

I am having a hard time with protien shakes. I really do not like them and it is getting harder to get them down. I have had them with ice in the blender and just shaken and it doesn't help. I have only tried a few because they are expensive and I don't want to get stuck with a bunch of protien. I like coffee and have not found any coffee flavored ones. I do like the unjury chicken and I will have that once a day. I am just two weeks out and I am limited on what I can eat.  Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Any soft food with high protien ideas or recipies would be great too. Thanks so much for your help...........

I had a tough time with protein shakes after surgery as well. I ate custard - both sweet and I made my own version of a savory one.

Also, I made sf, ff pudding and buried protein powder in it to cover up the yuckiness.

If you have an ice cream freezer - protein ice cream worked better for me. Eggface has a bunch of recipes on her blog for ice cream and suggestions for new op food as well.

I started buying my protein at GNC because they have a 30 day return policy on their products even if opened.  I loved Unjury but didn't want to pay for shipping everytime I had to order protein.  I went to GNC and tried some different powders.  I also picked up the bullets...those got me by the first few weeks before I could find a powder that I actually could stand to drink on a daily basis.  I LOVED syntha 6, it tastes so good. The carbs are high but the first couple of months you are not as worried about that. I have now switched to Designer Whey.  Chocolate is my fav so far.  The vanilla is doable, and I haven't tried any other flavor.  I now mix my protein with my coffee in the morning.  I have two cups of coffee so I split the serving of protein in half for each cup.  I mix the protein in some flavored syrup and fat free cream then I fill my cup with coffee stirring as I pour it.  Yum!  Drink decaf just to get the coffee flavor, but now I drink 1/2 caff.

For me with the protein I had to use milk (skim). Water does nothing for the protein powder in my opinion.  It's like drinking those nasty Yohoo drinks...Yuck!  I use an immersable blender so it doesn't create all the foam too.  If it's the smell I would cover your drink some how with a cup that has a lid.

www.drinkclick.com/    If you like coffee, Melting Mama loves this stuff.  I've never tried it, but I've heard rave reviews.

You can get samples of Chike protein for the just the cost of shipping ($3).  I ordered some a few weeks ago and got them just 2-3 days later.   I couldn't get this website to open, but maybe it will work for you:   www.chikenutrition.com/half-samples.html

Also, www6.netrition.com/cgi/product_categories_display.cgi   has all kinds of protein supplements you can try and their shipping is cheap ($4.95) for your whole order, no matter the size!

For soft foods.........have you tried Eggface's protein ice cream?   or her protein bites.......both are yummy!     theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/

Hope some of this helps!
Good luck!

I also could not find a protein powder that I liked. Because of the powdered milk taste to them.  I went to Gnc they have a return policy if you do not like something. Also if you are a gold card member you get a discount on items the first week of every month. The girl at gnc told me about Gold Standard 100% Whey Chocolate Malt....If you like chocolate malts from friendly's you will love this stuff. It mixes great with milk in a shaker cup. The only after taste is the malt flavor. I have tried a sampler flavors of this protein from bodybuilding.com they did have some coffee flavors but I didn't care for them as well as mixing coffee with the chocolate malt. I have mixed banana's or berries in with the flavor and it is great also.

With the left over protein I really didn't care for I made pudding pops with the protein and sf instant pudding. it was a nice sweet treat at the end of the day. The pudding hid the powdered milk taste and my daughter and her friends would eat them also.

I am post op now and still love the chocolate malt.

I also found a high protein Italian pudding recipe on the back of a Polly-o ricotta cheese that had 10 to 12 grams of protein per 6 oz serving and was good to eat.

Thank you all for your suggestions, you all had some good ideas which I will try, It is hard to get in enough protein at the soft food stage, I can't seem to get enough food in me to amount to much protein. I am a little concerned as I can eat an entire scrambled egg with cheese. I hope I am not eating too much..I can eat about a 1/2 cup of food at a sitting, I am eating slow and chewing everything well. Again thanks for the ideas..

I LOVE  PVL artic cappachino shakes from Nashua Nutrition, you do have to pay shipping, but this is the one I have used every morning for almost a year, I love it that much. With skim milk I get 31 grams of protein in before the day is rolling!  They just went up a bit to 31.95 a jar, but one meal aday and I get a month out of a jar. 2 weeks out concentrate on fluids.  Post what you don't want here and we might buy it off you, or bring them to a post op meeting and people might buy them from you.

It was magic when she realized who she had become...

I like the Slim Fast High Protein powder and put it in skim milk. I also add different flavoring, such as coconut, almond, etc to the vanilla one. It changes the flavor. If you could find coffee flavoring and add that to the vanilla, it would take care of 2 problems...liking the coffee flavor and getting the protein in. Good luck on the surgery. I had mine on Jan 12, 2009 and it has made such a difference in my life. Hang in there.
