Did anyone learn just before surgery that you had a hiatel hernia?  I just found that out yesterday.  Does it get fixed during bypass?

I guess the surgeon will determin if he/she is going to fix the hernia during surgery. You need to ask.  I've had a hiatal hernia for years and no one has done anthing about it. I was told that if it started causing problems for me then it would be repaired. So far no issues with mine.

I believe that a Hiatel hernia would be part of the operation, if it doesn't get repaired than your pouch contents would back up in to your throat (indigestion, but way worse) and can cause ulcers.  It may not be a problem now, but once you have a pouch that empties slowly it could be a problem. I have had one for years also, I take protonix for it.

Yeah, I'm on Protonix too.  I should ask my surgeon about it when he does my endoscope next Thursday.

I know they usually fix them at the time of surgery - gosh almost like getting 2 surgeries for the price of 1!  ( I know - I have a whacked sense of humor)
