Hello Everyone.  My name is Mary and I have been looking at this message board everyday since 11/19/08 which was the date of my orientation class.  I have gone through all the steps and had my appoinment with Dr. Toder on Friday the 13th.  When we were all finished, she asked me what surgery I wanted done and I told her I honestly did not know at the moment--my head was so full of information.  Well, I finally decided and called her today and told her I wanted the bypass instead of the band.  I hope I made the right decision.  I am so nervous!!

Welcome Mary.

Toder is my surgeon, she is very good at what she does.

It is a big decision - just to make the decision to have surgery, let alone the type of surgery. The all have their plusses and minuses, you have to decide what would work best for you - my insurance limited my choices to the band or the RNY - I chose the RNY because I wanted to not have the intense physical hunger and I wanted the surgery to force me into better and healthier choices that I hadn't been able to do on my own. I couldn't handle the lap band mostly because I'm a total wuss around needles and didn't think I could handle the fill process.

I much prefer the bypass...I have honestly heard of more problems from the band from people around me and hearing things at support group, etc.

Welcome Mary. This is a great board and we're here to help you.

You and I saw Dr. Toder on the same day! Me for my 4 week check up. You're in great hands, she's a wonderful skilled surgeon.

It's amazing the emotions as we go through this whole WLS process. It's normal.

Welcome!  You must be doing great if you already met with Dr. Toder!!  I decided to do the RNY because I don't think the band would do it for me.  I need the restriction and the lack of appetite, at least until I learn to eat normal quantities.  Good luck.
