My surgeons office called today and after only 1 week my insurance company approved me for surgery. My date is may 11 n bangor with Dr.Toder and I am soo excited. Now I am also starting to get very nervous wondering if this is the right thing. Even though I know it is. My job is also giving me a hard time already asking me how long im going to be out etc . I wanted to take my full 10 weeks that I have available and they want me to come back in like 4. I dont think that is very fair. how long did it take everyone to go back to work???? I work in retail and on have 30 min lunch if that and i really want to get into a routine before i go back.

Congrats on your date!!!!!!   May will be here before you know it!

I took 6 weeks off from work as I have to do some heavy lifting at times and I wanted to be sure I had the whole "food" thing down pat before I went back.

Will you be having the lap RNY? I'd discuss it with your doctor.  Some doc's want you out at least 6 weeks, others will let you go back much sooner!

GOOD LUCK!!!!  and CONGRATS!!!!!

If they absolutely need you back in 4 weeks ask if you can just work half days to start with. I was still really tired at the end of the day at 4 weeks out.. It is a wild ride and so very worth it. Wishing you the very best of luck on your journey.

WoooHoooo!!!! How exciting!!!

I took six weeks and was glad that I was able to - it is a major change in life. However - if absolutely necessary it is possible to go back sooner - but I would try and work a compromise like Kathy suggested of part days - you'll still most likely get tired easily.

Congratulations on the insurance approval and surgery date. Dr. Toder is wonderful!

Here's the H.R. person's advise( what I do at work) --By federal law your are allowed up to 12 weeks of Family Medical Leave per year, if you have been employed with your current job for 1 year and they employe over 40-50 people.  Of course the length of your leave is determined by what your surgeon recommends, what is medically necessary.

I took 3 weeks of after Family Medical Leave after surgery. I orginally thought I would return after 2 weeks, but thought better of that since week 3 is when we start with soft foods and that wouldn't be a good idea to try to start while at work if I had problems with the foods. So I spent the 3rd week introducing foods and learning what my pouch liked.

Hi Tiffany.

Congratulations on getting approval and a date!  Isn't the EMMC Surgical Weight Loss Center wonderful?  The next few weeks you'll probably be thinking May 11 will never get here and then before you know it you'll be thinking May 11 is here already???

No one can answer your question about time off except you and Dr. Toder.  I took 1 1/2 weeks off work but I had lap and everything went well.  I also have a desk job.  It will depend on if you have lap or open and how many hours you're going to be on your feet each day at work.  Also something to keep in mind is your medications (if you're on any).  I was on blood pressure meds and my blood pressure went crazy after surgery.  It took awhile for me to adjust going to half dosages and then none at all.  If I had a job where I was standing and/or walking all day I definately would have needed more time off than I took.  I told my company I would be having surgery and would be away from work 4-6 weeks.  They were thrilled that I came back earlier however they also told me if I came back and couldn't handle it to let them know and I could work shorter hours or fewer days or whatever.

It really bothers me that your store is looking at time off and not at your health.  Years ago I was the manager of a local store and I know what it's like to have to rearrange everyones schedule to make up for one less person however there's more to consider.  They're lucky this is a planned absence and not an immediate emergancy absence.  And most importantly they really don't want you back if you cannot handle being back.  I mean what if you're working and then feel lightheaded, faint, and get hurt?  There's so many bad things that can happen if you return to work before you are ready.

Tiffany please take the amount of time off that you need in order to heal.
Good luck to you.

Hi Tiffany,
Congratulations on your date, I know how you feel it is so exciting.... I have a desk job and I am planning for 3 weeks off, but my employer says to take what I need. I guess everyone is different.
Good luck..

Congratulations!  How very exciting. I want to take at least four weeks off, hopefully six so that I have everyting down and (can keep it down) before trying to get back in to it.  Don't let them pressure you.
