Good Morning    Dolly.   Weightloss surgery is an individual  choice.  But if you are a good dieter and can make  great choices about  portion size when  you feel restricted  then lap band can be a great  choice.   If you get impatient  and throw caution to the wind then  lap band may not work for you.  But it is a great operation and  if you are a good candidate your surgeon and the team will tell you.

I started out in the lap band program but because of my health issues   and needed to get my weight off now not three years from  now  my surgeon and lung doctor  recommended   rny.
But like i said it  is a personal decision  too.

I wish you the best  and if you talk with your team of professionals i am sure they  can help you with this  decision.  It won't be long now you will be on the losers bench with the rest of us!!!
Have a great sunday.

Hey Dolly,
It IS such a personal decision, so I can only speak for myself.  I felt a sense of urgency, having lost 2- 1/2 siblings in 18 months to weight related issues, and I felt I had run out of time.  I chose RNY because I shuddered to think of a foreign body in me, rather be rearranged than that-for me! I tell people this is MY personal miracle, it isn't for everyone, but it is for me. Talking to alot of people and going to both a Lap band and RNY informational meeting helped alot. Good luck with your decsion.

Good morning.  I too needed a more permanent situation to control my weight.  I also did not like the idea of a machine inside me or a port just under my skin to make adjustments to regulate my weight.  But that's just my personal opinion.

G'morning Dolly...

Going to the 2 ~ hour initial consultation really helped me a lot in making my decision.

Lynn was awesome in explaining ALL the pros & cons of all the different choices we have...and at the end of that 2 hours I knew I had made the right decison ( for me ) !!

Research it though...and when you think you've made up your mind...ask questions and research it again...

The very best of luck to you !!

For me choosing RNY over Lap Band was easy. I orginally wanted the Lap Band, but later found that it wasn't the right choice. I did a lot of reseach and after the 2 hour orientation I made up my mind. I already have a condition with my body that causes scar tissue so I don't need a forgein body inside me just waiting there like a ticking time bomb. That and its too much of a temptation to know that once you hit the goal and stay there you can have it romoved later. No thank you. I'm want to know this is permanant. Thank you.

There is no right or wrong choice of wls - only a right or wrong choice for you. My insurance limited my options for RNY or Lapband, so from there I made a list of what and why I needed to have the surgery. Mostly food at this point was my drug of choice - I needed to have it stop working for me just like alcohol did years ago - given this RNY seemed to be my choice with how fat and sugar worked in my body.

All our buddies have given you good answers.

I will tell you that I have a co-worker who wanted the lap-band. She was devastated at her 1st surgeon consult to find that he doesn't do lap band on any patient with a BMI >50.. She is now exploring RNY.

So personal choice and surgeon decision are true.

Good MOrning Dolly,  I dont want to say anything much except, I have the band and "LOVE IT" ... I can eat anything, and control it, what I mean by control it, I mean in 3 years, if I'm loosing too much I can have some fill removed, or if I start gainning a little in 3 or 5 years, I can have some fill put in.  wiht RNY after the first year or 2, you can't have any adjustments done, unless you have a revision and won't worry about having my tummy stretched or blood difficiencies.  I enjoy life and entertain alot so being able to eat normal was important to me.  Although If I was diabetic or needed RNY to loose ASAP, or had a larger BMI then RNY  is the way to go.  I went 3 months without loosing one lb. so you need to be very prepared that the BAnd don't do it for you.  You need to diet. and won't work till you have a restriction, which sometimes takes some time to get to the right one.  It was alot slower then I expected, but I wasn't prepared for how slow my Dr. would give fills.  I am now seeing results finally.  Everyone is right with it being your own personal dicision.  For me I had 3 friends who had RNY and were each hospitlized 3 or more times each with many many issues, so my family would not even discuss me having RNY, so my dicision was made for me.  and as for it being a forein object, you don't feel nothing, and would you not have a pace maker, or shunt, or screws or pins in broken legs, or implants for plastic surgery, contacts, ear tubes, teeth.  Good Luck making your choice, and go to the Band Forum to get lap band information, you won't get too much here, due to not many banders who post here, most of the posters are RNY.

I have Lap Band and I am doing Great with it... my band holds only 4 cc of saline so it does not take too long to get restriction right now my band has 1 3/4 cc and I have restriction and I have had it for some time. Yes weight loss is much slower but with that you don't have the sagging skin as bad either with excersise and toning you can work your skin. My doctor help me pick Lap Band because I take strong meds for my migraines and with RNY I would risk getting ulcers.  I was scared to get the Band because of the fills I hate needles. But to tell you the truth it really is nothing. You can't tell you have the band in you I only feel the port when I go and feel for it and the fill realy is nothing. I've only had 3 fills . Yes I'm not at goal BUT I have not gained either, I am off my diabetic meds, my blood pressure meds, my choles, so to me all is going good. My brother had RNY had good luck with it in the begining then problems started a few years after with ulcers, nearly dying from a leak with an ulcer, and now gaining, His girlfriend also had RNY she had compications from the get go, now has ulcers, problems with her sugar, she does tell me that she wishes Lap Band was around more when she had her surgery that she might have gone with that,,,,, but who is to say she would have ,,,, that is what she says now,,,,,  All surgeries work just have to find the one that is RIGHT FOR YOU AND YOUR LIFE STYLE ......Good luck with your choice. ~~~ Linda
