Yay for me!
Hi, I'm new to all of this! I am waiting for my psych eval, and after that, waiting for approval from insurance.
My question: The lack of appetite experienced in the first 6 months to a year because of lower Ghrelin levels (at least in theory) - does this appetite suppression go away eventually and the ghrelin levels return to normal?
Do people who have lost all that weight have a dificult time keeping it off, even if they continue with eating about 1200 calories daily, choosing healthy foods to make up that 1200 cals? Do people experience intense hunger again after losing 100 pounds or more after RNY gastric bypass?
Or is it psychological hunger or emotional eating, comfort eating that makes one gain, not hunger pangs?
Thanks for any comments: I just want to have a better idea of what I'm getting intol.
Love this site! I read it with great interest often and more often later when closer to surgery and then afterwards! Thanks!!!

COngratulations on your insurance approval. Now things start getting real. I hope you'll have a surgery date soon.
As for the other questions concerning WLS- what surgery are you looking into? You didn't say.
If it Lap band weight loss ris the result of stomach restriction. I'll let the band-ers give more info.
If you're looking into RNY the weight loss is due to both restriction and malabsorption. The stomach is stapled to create a smaller pouch plus the intestines are re-attached to the new small pouch much lower that original. You only have a small pouch- walnut/egg sized so you can't eat much plus what you do eat is not totally absorbed by the portion of the intestine that is attached to the pouch.
I'm only 6 weeks post op so can't answer the longer term questions. This is a life long commitment to observing diet and vitamin supplements. You can gain weight with either surgery by eating high calorie foods or not exercising.
