About me...

Ok so I was not going to post because I didn't want to scare anyway away from doing it, because not all of us go through this.  Dana, the dietitian I saw at my 2 week visit said I really need the support and should post, and asked me if it would have stopped me if I saw someone post the same way.  I said no, but a lot didn't scare me from this.

So here goes.  I have not been ignoring any of you, I just haven't sat up long or felt like typing when I did sit up.  I though I know its bad, go from my chair for a little while to the bathroom to my bed.  When I first got home I was great and was feeling great and getting my walks in.  Well you see I had it done open and I have a little infection, not bad the Dr. says, but it was making my incision run with gross stuff, so I had to constantly keep that bandaged, which I am sure with the infection it didn't make me feel any better.  Then my sugars have still been up in the 200's because I cannot eat now.  The smell of food makes me hurl.  Getting up and moving around makes me really week and I know its cause I haven't been doing a lot of it and that makes me throw up too.  I am not getting much up cause there is nothing there but I am nauseaus all the time, with the medicine only helping partly.  NOt getting in what I need and such is just making me sicker, but how the heck do you force yourself if your just going to throw it up.  Like last night I forced myself and  couple hours later I had diarrhea.  Anyway this is enough for now.  I am just wondering if anyone else went through this too?  I am scared and thinking I made a big mistake.  By the way glad to hear your doing great Terri and all the rest.  Sorry I haven't posted I just feel so blahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Hi Angela!
Glad to hear from you even though you aren't feeling well!!  WOW!   Sounds like you are having a rough time right now.  I sure hope they can get things straightened out for you and get you feeling better!  Sounds like it's awful right now!!

I agree that it is good for everyone to hear that not everyone has it easy with this surgery. We sure need to hear the good and the bad...I think it gave me a reality check!

Are there any other meds they can try to settle your pouch down so you can eat? I hope they are keeping a close eye on your labs....are you drinking enough?  Don't want you to get dehydrated on top of all this!  WOW!  I'm sure the infection isn't helping either...sheesshhh....I sure hope you feel better soon!  Please keep us posted when you are feeling up to it!  honks!  Ruth

Angela,
I'm sorry you're going through all these problems. Yes, it's scarey! And we are here to bounce your feeling off, complain, cheer when you reach a milestone and support and pray that things get better.
I hope you are able to get your sips of water and sips of protein shakes in. You need the protein to help your body heal. Did your doctor offer anything for the nausea? I hope you have some help at home while you're recouperating.

We all know there are risks with surgery. Sounds like you have had more than your share of complications. No- it won't change my decision. It does make me stop and think that, yes this could happen to me. Not everyone has smooth sailing with ANY procedure.

Best wishes, and please let us know how you're doing.

Hi  angela

drink drink drink.  The food can wait but the fluid  cant.   take little sips   or do whatever it takes to get the  fluid down.    try  soup  or anything that was on the liquid  diet.   sugar free popcicles  are good.

I hope things get better for you but  sometimes   the nausea lasts  for about three months.  so hang in there..  I  sure wish you the best.    Take care of yourself.

Hi Angela,

I can closely relate to what you are going through right now - I'm one of the people who went through a difficult time.

The only difference is that I didn't have open rny - but I did get an infection nonethe less.

Like you - I experienced a lot of nausea - ok - non-stop nausea 24x7 for two months. The pills helped a little - but not nearly enough. It was totaly exhausting just being that way day in and day out. Not that this is what I think you'll go through - it is different for everyone - but the funny thing was MainePam said she went through this and it lasted two months - which is exactly what happened to me.

As far as eating and drinking - it was a challenge, especially since just about everything early out was sweet and was making the nausea worse. I found for drinking, ice water was the easiest for me to get down and for eating I made a savory custard which helped me be able to eat something.

To be honest my first 5 months were very difficult - I was exhausted a great deal of the time, hormones raging......I was not also pleasant to be around ..... It wasn't until July that I started to be able to do more and not need naps and to go to bed a lot earlier than I was accustomed to.

The good news is that it does get better. I'm starting to have more energy, able to do quite a bit more than before surgery and am looking forward to the changes over the next year.

You'll get there, although while you are going through it - it seems like it will never end....then all of a sudden a few months down the road....it seems like it lasted such a short time. And for me, has been totally worth it.

Dear Angela,
Oh sweetie, I am so sorry you are having such a rough time. I am brand new at this, but I agree with Patty, try to get your fluids in even if you can't eat. Dehydration will only make you sicker. I am getting a good part of my protein requirments in by mixing a scoop of unjury unflkavored with crystal lite diluted half and half. Full strnght is too much for me now, though I used to make it with a third less water pre-op. I am concerned about your diabetes, too. Have you spoken with your PCP about that?

Don't stay away from here Angela. Come and vent or cry or whine or do whatever you need to do to get through it. We're here for you. I will keep you in my prayers, dear one.

Angela,
I wish I had a cure-all for you; but I don't.  This is a very difficult journey we have decided to put ourselves through.  Though yours sounds a little more complicated than mos.  I wish you luck and lots of support.

I am thinking they should have you go into the hospital for fluids and help you get rid of that infection so you feel better again. I would be on the phone with my surgeon saying fix this. Make sure they know how you are feeling. Be assertive when it comes to your health. I do know that being assertive is not something we are good at, but you need to try. Stick up for yourself and get things moving so you feel better girl you have been through alot and deserve to be feeling great.
