Hi Everyone, I need some help..... I have been diagnosed with mild sleep apnea it took 2 sleep studies to figure that out. Anyway my question is that my PCP has left it up to me wether or not should have a cpap machine. She says that I will probably not need it after the surgery and where my sleep apnea is mild I might not want to bother. Have any of you been in this situation, I want to make sure I do it all the right way.. What to do? What to do? I know that the machine can be hard to use my DH has a bipap machine which is actually as step above cpap so I am familiar with haw it all works. Any recomendations?

I can't presume to tell you what to do, but I, too, have some pretty mild sleep apnea (obstructive). Took them 2 sleep studies to get me set up with the cpap.  I was told by the pulmonary doc that they wouldn't do my surgery unless I used it all the time leading up to surgery!  It was a total pain as I always felt the pressure was too high and I slept better without it than with it.  But, now that I've had surgery...I gotta be honest, I don't use it anymore.  They did a pulse oximetry test on me overnight not too long ago and I was told I SHOULD still use it, but I find it too uncomfortable.  If your PCP is ok with signing off on your surgery and the surgeon will allow you to have surgery without it, then I say "go with it"!  Just check to be sure the surgeon will still do surgery...even if it IS mild...some docs want you to use it post-op.  Good luck!  Ruth

I can't help you but agree with Ruth, you don't want to ruin the changes of cancelling your surgery. check it out, because I think if your surgeon requires it he will require you to wear it for some time before wls.  I have a question too.  Why do they test some people for sleep apnea and not other?  I never was even tested??? I wish my DH was tho, He makes some pretty weird noses.  I night I thought there was someone outside whistleing, and he it was him the whole time, it sounded far away.  Man, he scared me to death, Thought it was robbers with a secret code. lol
