Vacationland- Bah Humbug

My BIL and SIL have been talking about coming to visit but nothing , so far, has come of the talk.

I got a phone call today. The voice mail said "we've made plane reservations for Sept 25- Oct 2 to visit you along with our 2 friends".  I wasn't going to tell them I was scheduled for WLS. Just let them see the results at a future date. My program has the 2 week liquid diet pre-op. I will be in days 4-11 of my liquid diet.  My heart is pounding. I am at such odds. We love visiting with them, love touring, dining etc. But this isn't the way I wanted it to be.

I don't want to hear anything they have to say concerning WLS- SIL is dead set against it. Would it be considered rude to disappear while they're here? Maybe abducted by aliens?

Should I postpone my surgery? Should I lie and tell them I have gastro-intestinal problems? HELP!?!?!?!

I wouldn't postpone either!  You've waited so long, why wait any longer?  I'd tell them some other story...GI problems are always good!  It will be hard to go out and watch them eat, but the long term result will be SOO worth it!  Too bad they couldn't have asked before making the plane reservations....maybe you could have steered them to an earlier or later date?!?!  BTW....I have an extra bed if you need to escape!  haha!   Good luck and let us know how it goes and how you decide to handle it!  honks!!!!!  Ruth

The only thing I would post-pone is their visit.  It may be just me, but I find it a bit rude that they made the reservation date without checking with you first.  Especially since they will be bringing friends.  Do they plan on staying at your place?  If not, you may be able to get through this without any issues.  My 2 week diet was 3 shakes a day with 1 small meal per day for 13 days then on the 14th day, all shakes.  Is that how yours works?  If so, you will still be able to eat while they visit...you can have the 1 small meal at any point in the day.  If they ask why you aren't eating much, use you GI problems excuse.    But, if they are supposed to stay with you, I really would see if they can reschedual the trip.  I don't know how that works with the airlines or anything...but that's what I would do.  I know you love them and enjoy their company, but just by reading your post, I can see how stressed it's making you.  Do what you need to do for YOU.  Let everyone else worry about themselves.  You deserve for this process to be as smooth and pleasant as possible.
That's just my opinion...hope it helps.
Take care and good luck.

I have calmed down- sort of.  The 4 guests will all be staying with us in our house.  I better get cleaning and straightening out rooms!

Thank you for your suggestions. I have decided that this IS  important. This is about ME! I have been through the process to get to this point since November last year. I'm not going to change a thing concerning surgery. I am going to work the Wed-Friday when they arrive- that will leave me only Sat-Wed with them. I had all my vacation and sick time planned for my surgery and DH's in December - throw in another monkey wrench.

My program through EMMC calls for  ALL liquids- same as mistyblueyes has been going through. Protein shakes, soy milk, strained cream soups, custard, light& fit yogurts, SF popsicles, diluted juices, and WATER for 2 weeks prior to surgery.

It will be a challenge as our guests are food addicts- every food is "to die for" , " you've gotta try this"...... which I don't want any part of. I want to be healthy!

So the new motto is BE STRONG!

I agree with Kathy, a supervised Dr's diet..the truth , who gives a shi--what people say, who struggles everyday with the complications of obesity?  Whose knees hurt, who has a hard time running with the kids, who can't breathe on humid days, who knows what else is going on with your heart,   you are doing this for YOU!! SIL and BIL can have their to die for food-AIN'T that the TRUTH!! We were literally dying for food...nope not me, not anymore...you will join us on the journey to reclaiming your life and your health. We will be here with you to cheer you on and so will your mirror and your labs!!

I agree, all perfect solutions, I also would tell them You could use their help to make this "Dr's diet" easier, to not rub in the good food, that this will be hard for you, and you need their support. if they dont' help you, then maybe you should reconcider making reservations at a hotel for them.  You will do so awesome then be so proud of yourself, you go girl!!!

I agree with all, but can I just say, Kate you ROCK!  Remember this is just a bump in the road and you will be glad you didn't postpone your surgery.
