OT: Can you help me with this one?

I'm just looking for some inside knowledge, so I can try to understand.  So here is the issue....  My BIL from Florida has always been this way, but in his Older age he is getting almost hurtful to everyone, can you all tell me why a person would act this way, here are things he says.... when driving to boston with my DH and his 2 boys friday, came back and I asked what did you think of my new little car?  and he said I hated it, its too big, his wife and I started laughing cause we knew he was going to say something negative cause that is what he does.  Next, I said after a bbq meal, which by the way was complimented on by 6 people, I said how was your dinner, he said "If I would have liked it I would have said something" I said "OUCH" that was hurtful, and he said, "and I don't change my answer".... he said our new addition wasn't what he would have done, it wasn't his style, you get my drift, it goes on and on and on,  now do you think he does this cause he is just a negative person? or do you think he is hurful, or jealous??? I had a talk with him and asked why he did that, and he said he tells the truth???  I'm just glad I don't live close to him.  I actually teased him all weekend, he said he wants to move in when he retires and I said, "only if you work on being less negative"??  what is your opinion?? thanks

I also thought that, but do people get jealous when they actually have the same or more then we do??? "Material" that is???

Apparently he missed the lesson  "if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all".
Sounds like a hard guest to have visiting. I'd have bit my tongue several times.

hhmmm....I think you handled it better than I would have!  I don't think I coulda kept my tongue/mouth in check  (not with these hormones I got going on!!!!!)  Tell him to be glad he isn't my BIL!   Amazing what some jealousy will do to a person!?!?!   Just my opinion!  hugs!  Ruth

Cheryl I think he's jealous of your "hominess" your great marriage and how well you are doing for yourself.  If he has lots of material things maybe he's trying to make up for what he lacks emotionally or doesn't know how to express appropriately.  Just a take on it.  Makes me think of a certain gentleman we used to work with who had a lot but was always very negative ~ I always thought it was because he had no one special and didn't know how to have good emotions without sad ones?  Does that make any sense at all??  Probably not.

Oh Well...it wasn't done for him or even to impress him...so he needs to just get over it !!  And kudos to you for dealing with him and the whole situation the way you did...I agree with Ruth...I'm pretty sure my mouth would have kicked into "over-drive"
Just curious...but...do you hold your breath and count to 10 very often when he's around ???

haha, no I don't, i'm not perfect believe me.  I roll my eyes and walk away, I just can't have him think it don't affect me at all.  I am just trying to keep the peace.  I told him a few times, I wouldn't have thought you liked it, you don't like anything.  But, mostly in a kidding tone.  he only stayed 4 days, Thank God.  Thanks guys
