I am so sorry that you and your husband had an experience that would keep you away from church, Cheryl. You are not alone, tragically. The church (not just organized religion, but the people who make up our faith communities) have done some pretty awful things in the name of righteousness...which is usually not righteous at all, but self-righteous. I believe in a God who welcomes EVERYONE. A God of forgiveness who knows we are human and will never be perfect, but who loves us anyway and who accepts us unconditionally. Even (perhaps especially) those in the church who think they are perfect and drive others away. We forget that our churches are populated by sinners and that people screw up. People just like me! it is sad, but true, and I would rather work within the body of Christ to help change that than stay away. I would miss the blessings too much. I know you well enough from this board to know you have a heart for God, Cheryl. I see it in everything you say and do. So you just keep on loving and working in God's creation and that gives God all the glory God needs from any of us. And is a better Christian witness than many of us ever make.
