Vitamin Question

DH and I had our 1st visit with the surgeon Wednesday. After the visit we had blood work done to get baseline numbers prior to surgery. Yesterday we got a phone call that his blood work was fine, but my Vit B12 and D were low. I have a prescription for Vit D and need to purchase B-12 1000 mcg sublingual.

I'm just wondering, how can this be? I take a centrum vitamin and Calcium w/ D every day? Any ideas? One of my goals is to be taking LESS pills. At this point I will be adding to the pill list.

Thanks for any ideas.

My vit D was low pre-op too and I had to take prescription Vit D for 4-5 weeks....now it's fine.  Alot of people are B12 deficient and don't know it.  Happens alot post RNY also.  Pills are better than injections though and the consequences of NOT having enough B12 aren't good!  Maybe you'll be able to bring your numbers up pre-op and get off those supplements post-op,   Check labels and online to see if you can get some of those vitamins through your food.  Good luck and let us know how it goes!   Ruth

Mine was the same thing, I took Vitamin D once a week for three weeks prior to seeing the surgeon as well as the Calcium with D, which I still take since my 2 week post operative check up.

Hi Some of us   don't make vitamin  d  efficiently.    and we dont get it from the sun  here in Maine or north of georgia from   November  to   May.    I am one of those people.    since  taking vitamin d  my level was fine at six months. The  B-12  is another one that some of us don't make  very well and I knew that my mom didn't as she always got  b 12 shots when she got older.    I take 2500  sublingal  and my levels were fine  at  six months.   B12  is one of those vitamins that we don't  store in our body  if we dont use it we pee it out.    sorry for the tmi. I took  centrum and calcium w/d every day too and i had to have  vitamin d before surgery. You are not alone!!!! Have a great day and weekend.!!!!

Vitamin D deficiency is very high in the state of Maine due to our lack of sunlight during the winter hours.  Our bodies find it hard to recover after the hard winter of darkness.  I did some research when mine was low pre-op too.  I took what was prescribed and have kept it in my vitamin regimen since surgery and have not had a deficiency since.  Vitamin D is strangely connected to the sun so if you can get out more that is the best way to help boost it.  B12 is one of those vitamins you can not live without post-op.  It has a major impact on energy leve.  I take one 2500mcg sublinual's twice a day.  If I don't I'm down for the count about 4pm.  Some days I've forgotten my dose at lunch and have to stop on my way home to take a 10 minute nap because I'm falling asleep at the wheel.  Very scary!! Good luck to you.

Yeah.  Three weeks before surgery Dr. Huang prescribed Vit D for me as well. Vit D has been in the news a lot lately.  I don't read entire articles...just skim over them but basicly what I get from those articles is that we need more vit D than "they" (who is this they person anyway?) thought we need so the daily requirement has been (or in the process of being) upped.  Anyway more and more people are being put on supplements.  I don't mind and the prescription is cheap enough.  Problem for me is it's one a week and that makes it difficult for me to remember.   As for B12...be thankful they caught it early.  My daughter recently found out she is very low.  She had 7 daily shots and now has a once weekly shot.  She screams, tenses, and cries over shots so she certainly wasn't going to do it herself.  It's been years since she has been able to have an injection.  Usually the tech gives up and just won't take the chance.  She braved the once daily shots (I'm so proud of her) that ended last Wed.  Her arms are very bruised, poor thing.  I teased her that she's going to go from no, no injections please to heading off to drug rehab.  Please God don't let her get THAT used to injections.
