Hi i'm kinda new to this forum, but I just had to share that Friday my Dr.'s office called and I've been approved by my insurance company to have RNY!!!!!  I'm soo excited!  I'm a little nervous, but I  can't wait to take the next step.  I've read a lot of posts on this site and 'm anxious to join in on the great success you all have had.  One thing is kinda bugging me though.  I don't know how I'm going answer the "how'd ya do it ?" question when people start noticing weight loss.  It's not that I'm ashamed, I just feel it's a private decision and I feel I don't need to tell everybody.  I read somewhere on this site that another woman was in the same dilema.  She kept running into rude comments along the lines "how'd you lose the weight, Surgery?" in a nasty tone .  She would answer " the HARD WAY".  I really thought that was cool.  It's sooooo true.  I don't want to lie because I'm not ashamed of the truth I just feel it's no ones business.  i know that probably sounds harsh, but I don't need negative comments.  Does any one have any other suggestions?

welcome and congratulations.  Please join us here, we attack every question there is, all with different opinions and suggestions,  As for what to say to them, I'm not the best with that answer, but I'm sure there are others that have a great way with words.... listen well... good luck and keep in touch..

Welcome!!!!!!! Congrats on your approval!!!!! The people I've met on here are great and very supportive! I was kinda like you in the beginning. I didn't tell anyone that I was going to have surgery because I didn't want anyone to think I was a failure if things didn't work out. Now, my family knows, most of my coworkers know and all are very supportive. I'm not going around yelling it to anyone, but I don't feel that I need to hide it either. I've tried losing a bunch of times and have never been able to keep it off. This time will be different! I WILL lose and I WILL keep it off!!! I WILL be healthy. If people ask, I will tell them but I don't think I'll be sharing if they don't ask. For those that think this is the "easy way out", I'm just gonna make sure they know that there is nothing easy about it and I'll let them know all I've had to go through before and after surgery to make this work! I know I've already given my family an education (mom thought I could just go to the surgeon, schedule surgery and the weight would just disappear or something.....she's learning and allowing me to teach her.) For those that just don't get why I need surgery even after the info I give them, well, if they can't support my decision, then I probably don't need to be very good friends with them. (Does that make sense?) Surround yourself with people who support you....... the opinion of the rest of the people doesn't really matter.... in my opinion. WoW, I think this is the most I've ever typed on here! Sorry for being so long winded. Welcome and keep me posted on your progress! Ruth

Welcome to the family!!! I am 9 days shy of being 1 year out.  I simply tell those who I don't want to know that I "did it" by watching what I eat and exercising ~ both true I just leave out the part about the surgery.  Yes, most people think it's the "easy way out" but actually it is quite the opposit as many of us can attest to.  It is a personal choice of who you tell and who you don't.

Welcome to our little family. Glad you got your approval. It is a wonderful tool WLS Which ever one you choose is right for you. You are on your way to better health. The only people I told about my surgery are ones I thought would be concerned seeing the rapid weight loss. Good Luck with your journey.

Welcome to the Maine board. We're glad you're here. Congrats on your approval. The wait for the surgery date will go by quickly.

Don't worry about what to say. You can simply be partially truthful when you say I watch what I eat and exercise. It's true and people don't need to know you had surgery. That's a personal choice and personal information. If they ask you how much money you make I'm sure you wouldn't answer that either.

Anyway, good luck with the rest of your journey. Keep us posted on your progress. We're here to help any way we can.

Thanks for the warm welcome all of you!!!  I'm looking forward to being able to share this journey with you all.  I feel as Mainers we share a common respect for hard work and lord knows if we can make it through these winters we can make it through anything!!!  I'll keep you all posted when I get my surgery date and if I have an other questions.  I've done so much research and asked so many questions already, but there is always more to learn.  i'm really trying to be as prepared as possible.  The support from you guys is AS essential as support from my family.  I told my parents about a month ago and my mom was terrified.  But , the more I educated her on the process and related my emotional struggles because of my weight the more she came around.  My Dad was surprisingly the most supportive.  I waited until my approval to tell my sis.  She was about half afraid for me and half supportive.  Anyway, thanks again for the warm welcome and I'll try not to be soo long winded ;) Keela
