sugar vs. sugar alcohols

Do you guys know the difference---or the rules between sugar and sugar alcohols?  I know we should try to stay under 5g of sugar to avoid dumping.  So what about the sugar alcohols. For example.  I just had a sugarfree pudding that my mom brought home.  I added my anywhey and had it for lunch.  Then we look and there are 7g of sugar alcohols but 0g sugar. I feel fine, no adverse effects---but should we be on the look out for these---is there a limit?  How does something that is sugar free have sugar alcohols??

The sugar alcohols are slower in affecting your body. I have had the SF candy on occassion. They are usually made with Splenda/ malitol ( which gives me a lot of gas)/ I can't think of the other ones.I think they are Ok in limits and not for newbies cause they can cause dumping.

Hi Tanya!  I am glad you are doing well!! I do know that you should watch the sugar alcohols..  Some people do dump on them. But then some do not (including myself)  But they are not as bad as sugar.

Hi Tanya,
Hope all is going well!!
I'm one of the lucky ones who seems to dump on the littlest amounts of sugar...and sugar alcohols. I can't have more than 9 grams of sugar or 14 grams of sugar/sugar alcohol combination. Makes life very difficult, even in choosing protein bars. Oh well!! Sugar alcohols like everything else is individualized. A co-worker of mine who had surgery 3 weeks after I did can have up to 21 grams of sugar and NOT DUMP!!!! My suggestion is to watch it all until you are a little further out. Dumping is no picnic, as I'm sure you know.
Take care & so glad you are doing well,
Stephanie

I am going to be very careful about the sugar.  I do not want to be on the floor in the middle of walmart or something.  I have a feeling that I will be one of the ones that does not dump at all.  Not that I am planning on eating anything bad at all.....but I wouldn't mind having issues so that I know for sure I would never stray for a looooonnnnng time!
