I'm not sure when your surgery date is, but is there any chance you could go to a Sox game late in the season when you could have some solid food? This is a tough situation, for sure, and you have to do what is most comfortable for you not only the day you go, but for the long term.
If it were me, I would probably tell them the truth and follow that with "I am a grown woman who has done all the research on this and with the assistance of my primary care physician and a host of other doctors, I have decided this is the right step for my long term health. I know how you feel about it, but I would appreciate your loving support and if you are unable to offer that then your silence will do nicely." And bring a squirt gun and shoot her every time she makes a negative comment!

wow, I actually just cut and pasted that and saved it. I'm going to rehearse it. Just in case.
As for going at the end of the season, we will be going several times, my husband and son have bought about 64 tickets. We pick and choose which ones are the best, which ones we can make good money off of and which ones just the guys go to, and then usually make enought money to take the limo, which is why we do that. We have a few other we go down to boston and get a room and go to 2 games. my son works for Holiday Inn so we get employee rate. I can handle the non eating part or drinking, but was worried about my sister In Law. Thanks for the great line It will be used shortley I'm sure... Love Love Love it... take care
