Since shoving a NG tube down your throat in an emergency can goof up your bypass and God know's what else I got me a med bracelt to wear that says I have gastric bypass and no blind NG tube. I have worn my all the time for a year and half. never thought about asking if you guys wear one. Might be something to consider. I got mine online for like 12.00. Pam

No, i don't wear one and don't think i'll get one in the future. The way I look at it, is if they need to put in a blind breathing tube in an emergency the fact that I've had RNY isn't going to be a big deal - by that I mean, if I'm not breathing well I don't think the paramedics will give a rats behind if I had RNY - their job is to save your life and get you breathing. I'd be willing to bet that even with the bracelet, that if you were in danger of dying enough to need a blind ng tube that they'll just do it!

Well Summer I have heard that if they know you have had a gastric bypass they can put it in blind and not go as deep but can help your breathing i just didn't want to take a unneccessary chance. But to each his own. I feel comfortable in telling people I have had the surgery too and many do not.

Oh ok, not going in as deep would probably be helpful. I certainly see your point! :) I'm absolutely comfortable telling people i had surgery too - heck, my husband mentions it practically every day on his radio show! I have seen the beaded ones too - they are awfully pretty! (not too cheap though!) Is getting a bracelet or necklace something that your surgeon recommended? I'd actually never heard of the need to get one at all until I started reading the boards here. My surgeon and primary care docs never said anything about it! Hopefully none of us will need to be tubed!!! :)

Hi Pam,     I don't have a med bracelet as of yet, but think it's probably a good idea.  I visited a site that makes them look like beaded bracelets, but they are a bit pricey.       My curiosity is whether Paramedics or EMT's actually take the time to look for a bracelet in a accident or emergency situation.  I know they are suppose to, but do they?  A friend of mine who had RNY decided to go with the med necklace instead of the bracelet, thinking that an EMT would more likely see a necklace than a braclet, especially if they have to open up your shirt.       I wonder if anyone here has experienced any cir****tances like this?       Thanks for the reminder Pam.  Life is short, but we don't have to help it along.  Guess I need to remember the motto:  BE PREPARED Blessings, Yvonne

I have one also. It's just a metal plate that has rings on the ends with my first name on the front and on the back it says" No NG tube w/o scope...No oral NSAIDS...Allergic to Asprin" I make the bracelet parts with different beads and clips on each end so I can change the look whenever I want to. I made the first one before surgery and now it's so big I can slip it on without unhooking it. My wrist went from 8" to 6 1/4" it's weird I never thought I had that much fat on my wrists. I bought the engraved plate on Ebay for about $25 but it's very nicely done. Cheryl

I plan to get one when the times comes.  I've read a lot of books and articles and things online and I feel it's something I want to have.   As I understand it paramedics are trained to look at a persons ankles, wrists, neck....everywhere for  a medic alert tab.  I just hope if the situation arises my paramedic follows the rules.

Never considered it but it might be a good idea.
