bowel obstruction

I just spent 7 days at EMMC.  went in last Tuesday nite to the ER per surgeons suggestion.  I had been having abdominal pain all day, that kind of felt like the worst case of gas, but wouldn't go away.  They did a CAT scan with contrast and found a "kink" in my small bowel caused by an internal hernia.  So at  I was in surgery at 2:30 in the morning.  I know have the scar of an open RNY, and an added bonus of a Gtube placed in my old stomach.  It seems as though the blockage caused alot to back up into my old stomach and it needed to be drained.  I will keep this in until my two week checkup and if everything thing is ok, he will pull it out.   Dr. Huang wasn't oncall that night, but Dr. O'Conner was and she was terrific!!!! I am so glad I listen to my body, I just knew something was really wrong....... I am on the mend and out of work for about 4 weeks now, 2 weeks longer than the RNY, but oh well, **** happens.   Would I still do it all over again??? the surgery RNY???  HELL YES!!

Hi Maryellen, I am glad you listened to your body!!  Sometimes we take for granted that nothing is wrong and to keep on with our daily lives, but in the back of our minds we KNOW when to seek out medical help!!  I am glad you are feeling better!!  Oh yeah I would do it over again in a heartbeat!!

Maryellen, Sorry to hear that. My freind that had the surgery 3 years ago ended up about 6 weeks ago with a bowel obstruction and ended up with a temp colostopy.Everyone needs to take something for constipation regularly. Keep us posted how your doing. Prayers your way, Pam

My bowel obstruction was not caused by constipation.  I had an internal hernia that blocked my small intestine.  THank god I don't have a colostomy, just a temporary Gtube.   Thanks for the prayers, I am getting better everyday. Maryellen

Maryellen, I'm sorry you had to go through all that. That's so scarey. I'm glad you're feeling better. Please keep us updated on how you're doing.  Thank you for sharing your experience. It helps remind us that we all need to listen to our bodies, no matter how long we are out from surgery. We're all blessed to have this surgery, but we shouldn't take it for granted that we are "out of the woods" once we're all healed.  Merry Christmas, ~dori~
