Mixing Protein in Hot Liquid?

Is there a trick to mixing protein podwers in hot liquid?  I have been experimenting here and there to see what will work etc.  Everytime I try to mix either an unflavored or flavored protein powder in something hot the protein clumps and floats.  It seriously looks like scrambled egg whites floating on the top lol. I was hoping to put unflavored in sugar free spiced cider or a flavored one in a sugar free diet hot chocolate---or even in a decaf coffee.  Anyone tried putting this stuff in hot liquid to drink or soup?  How did you get it to mix up?

I've had the same problem. I tried vanilla in water to mix it then heated it and added decaf coffee. it was awful. it was like it curdled. i'd love to know how to mix it and have it smooth.

I can only speak about this one powder that I've tried pre-op - which is unjury, with that you cannot mix it with liquids hotter than 130 degrees. I asked a question about baking with protein powders a few weeks ago on the rny board because of the temperate issue. Jerome from unjury responded to me and it was interesting that you described it like a scrambled egg - because he used an egg as an analogy on how the protein reacted as it was heated up. He also mentioned that the powders will also make baked goods a little dryer and to adjust baking to compensate.

I put the vanilla flavored 100% whey from GNC in my tea all the time but it has to be under 130 degrees. I also add 1 packet of hazelnut flavored splenda, it tastes like a cappachino (sp).  Good luck, Cheryl

what i do with my unjury power vanilla . Mix it up  the vanilla unjury with 8oz cold water in my shaker,  shake it up so it mixed well, Then i add 8oz of ho****er , 1 teaspoon instant coffee to the the shaker and mix.. I dont have any problems as long as I mix with cold water first then add the ho****er. Great cup of coffee and get in 16 oz of fluid also Barb

You can mix it into a small amount of cold water then add the ho****er to it. I put a scop into 2oz of cold watr, mix well then fill with ho****er to the recommended 8ounces. Works like a charm. I even do this with coffee. Mix protein with cold water then add hot coffee. Stir and it's great...protein and coffee in one.

I mix my unjury chocolate flavored with about a half cup of cold water, then add brewed coffee or instant coffee and ho****er. It really needs the cold water, so the hot coffee or water doesn't "curddle" the protein powder. I then add a teaspoon of sugar free french vanilla creamer. This is really good, and I usually do it in a travel mug so I don't smell the protien powder.  This tastes really good, and I can get in 20 grams of protein, first thing every morining. I couldn't get in enough protien before I started doing this. I got this tip from another WLS poster on the RNY main board.

Thanks everyone!  Being abl to have it in my nightly HOT drink will be HUGE!  I always like to wind down and relax with some warm apple cider, or hot chocolate or coffee----all sf and decaf of couse :) I am going to try it in a few minutes with my coffee and see how it goes.  I am going to use the french vanilla all the whey I just got since I don't have an unflavored one yet.  I liked the any whey Kathi sent me---so I am gonna pick some of that up (but I have a feeling I am getting it for Christmas).  It is funny---I asked for most things for WL.  Protein powders, gift certificates to places to get protein stuff---a hydra coach water bottle.  I know I am getting that since it was the one thing I specified that I HAD to have.

Worked like a charm mixing it in the cold first.  I used 2 oz of cold water and 1/4 of the sample---didn't want to waste a whole sample if it didn't work. I bet the cinnamon bun flavor would be good in coffee!
