Depression????

Did anyone have a period of depression in the first couple of weeks post-op? I can only describe it as sort of like post-partum depression. I am feeling better now, but for awhile there I was worried. I didn't feel like doing anything even though I was feeling better physically every day. I am worried that there doesn't seem to be a limit on the amount of food I can eat at a meal. I am watching portions, but I don't feel full. I am losing weight but have a fear that I won't have dumping if I do something wrong. Will things change that drastically when I can begin eating solid foods???? Am I just not getting enough protein??? Getting my liquids in seems to be a full time job right now. Thanks for letting me vent. I see my nut. Wednesday so hopefully she will have some answers for me too. Kim

From what I have read, experienced and heard, this is totally normal. You are changing your relationship with food on a major scale. I would cry at the drop of a hat the first month not knowing why. Some of it is that the anesthesia is working its way out of your system...some of it is that food has been a comfort for so long and that comfort is no longer there. You have to focus on other things that make you feel good.  Are you eating slowly? Make sure you only eat your measured portions for 1/2 hour and no more. I had Dr Wolffe and she said don't worry about eating anything if I wasn't getting enough liquids...she said that was the first order of business then the solid protien.

Oh my gosh Kim! Some time within the first 2 wks I wrote on here that I needed someone...ANYONE... to call me immediately; I was crying and thought I was gonna lose it. Thankfully someone did call me right away and let me know what I was feeling was completely normal. For me personally I think it was the "oh so many different changes" that I was trying to deal with all at once that "sent me over the edge". It does make sense. I also never feel full when I eat. I do reach a point where I feel if I take one more bite I will get sick... my nutritionist said everyone is different and that she thought it was better that I get that "sick" feeling instead of feeling full-(something to do with if I am not full I won't stretch my stomach as quick..or something to that effect).  Please hang in there and if you would like my # to have someone to talk to that has been thru this, just drop me a line. Talking to someone who has gone thru this helped me tremendously! I haven't dumped either and still have problems getting all my liquids in. They told me protein is the important thing. Guess it depends on who u talk to lol....Take care...Netti
