Home and doing well....

Hi all, as you already heard my surgery went very well. Dr. Cobean was very pleased with my post-op walking and they let me go right after lunch on Tuesday. I must say that when Dr. Cobean met with me pre-op I think he tried to scare me to death. He came in to the pre-op room and told me that the last surgery he had done like mine, the guy was still in the ICU. He was going to live but there had been a couple of times that Dr. Cobean didn't think so. Needless to say, my husband was a nervous wreck and was very relieved when Dr. Cobean came to talk to him after my very short surgery to tell him that all had gone very well. The surgery was very easy, in fact it was even easier than some of his "from scratch" surgeries. Anyway we headed directly home from the hospital with lots of stops for walks and such. Got home about 7:00 pm Tuesday. Yesterday was not good. Of course I couldn't sleep in my bed, I am trying to get in my fluids...but it is hard. The pain meds they put me on made me sick so I a using only tylenol for pain. Don't feel like eating anything at all, but I am really trying. Today is much better, I found that with strategically placed pillows, I was able to sleep in the bed. I am still sore, but it is getting better ever day. I find that when I start feeling uncomfortable, it helps to get up and walk. Of course everytime I move my dog is right at my heels, he is almost as supportive as my husband (kidding.). My husband, Joel, has been absolutely wonderful and yesterday he did say he was finally starting to feel better. He hates to see me in pain and has been having a very hard time the past couple of days. So, I think that brings you all up to date. Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts. And, Kathy, thank you for trying to see me, I am very sorry to have missed you.

Congratulations to You!  Glad to hear that you're home and doing so well. I too had to use coping skills when I first got home as I was a bit sore but not in pain. You're right, it will only get better and better as the days pass. Keep it up! It's great having you on the loser's bench with the rest of us! Anne

I have been reading this message board for a while, but have never posted.  I haven't had my surgery yet, but am almost done all my pre-op stuff.  Glad to hear you're home and healthy.  Wonder what happened to the poor guy before you.   Best wishes for much success!

Yay!  Kim, Welcome Back and I am so glad that everything went smoothly!!  I can't believe Dr Cobean said that!! Your poor husband!    I was told not to worry about eating the first week.  Just more importantly, make sure you get the fluids in.  The protein will come!   Welcome to the losing side, again!  This time to stay!

HI, Kim  H

Glad to see you back on the boards, I’m really happy that everything went well, with your surgery. I can’t believe your doctor induced high blood pressure before you surgery!  I’m hopping that I can meet up with you after you feeling a little bit better, maybe we could catch a support meeting together at tamic.  The ride from Portland must have been awful? Did you have open or lap, I can’t remember you telling me. Well anywhoo once again I’m really happy everything went well. Kim J

Welcome back to the board Kim!  Glad to hear everything went well.  I am still sleeping with a pillow and I am 4 weeks out.  If there is every anything I can do to help, please just let me know.  If you would like my phone number to just have someone to talk to just write to me personally and I will gladly give it.  I found I needed someone after a couple weeks.  Congrats and hope everything stays going great.

Lyndsay, A "from scratch" surgery means a first time wls. Mine was a revision from a previous wls that failed due to a ruptured suture line. Dr. Cobean revised my original surgery (a VBG) to a standard RNY. As far as the gentleman who had revision two weeks before me, I don't know exactly what happened but whatever it was it made Dr. Cobean very very nervous about performing my surgery. Dr. Cobean didn't elaborate on exactly what went wrong, just that "everything fell apart" and he had written the guy off as dead a couple of times during the two weeks, but that now it looked like he would live. I can only assume that this guy had more co-morbidities than I did, was older or just wasn't as healthy (in general) as I was. Anyway, Dr. Cobean was extremely glad that my surgery was as easy as it was...so was I, lol. Kim

Glad to hear you are home and doing well...but seriously---what doctor tells a patent that before surgery.  That alone would have given me a heart attack---geesh.   I know walking helps a TON!  After my c-section with the twins I made sure I wakled every chance I got and I ended up healing much faster than some other new moms I know. Keep walking and getting those fluids in!  You are on your way!

Hi Kim,   I'm happy to hear that your home and progressing in your recovery.  Take it slow.  Every day will get you closer to feeling 100% again.   Your husband sounds alot like mine.  I think my hubby is just now starting to breath easier about this whole surgery thing and I'm almost 3 months out.  Poor guys!!  They really do go through the wringer for us!    Keep us posted on your recovery.  We're rooting for ya! Blessings, Yvonne
