Hi everyone, I'm trying to get MaineCare I know theres a "waiting list" how long does the waiting usally take? Does Mainecare require a 3 or 6 month diet for non-categorical coverage?  Does non-categorical coverage even cover WLS? Anyone dealing with Mainecare run into any problems?

Thanks! Kim

I had MaineCare when I first started the WLS process.  I'm not sure how long it took to sign-up & receive MaineCare itself...most likely around 30 days.   MaineCare has made many changes to their policy regarding WLS in the past couple years.  As far as I know, they do not require a 3/6 month diet.  They do require a serious comorbidity, like respitory disease, sleep apnea, etc.   This is where I ran into problems with MaineCare.  My comorbidities did not qualify as serious enough, so they denied my application twice.  Thankfully we switched insurance companies and I am now 10 days post-op!   Good luck on your weight loss journey!   Blessings, Yvonne

Thanks for the reply, Congratulations I hope your recovery continues to go smooth. I have, type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure...are those at least considered serious co’s? :) Kim

Hi Kim,     You should be fine.  Yes, those are 2 comorbidities recognized by Maine Care at the moment.  Keep the faith!   Blessings, Yvonne

When I started I had Aetna and MaineCare and during my process lost my Aetna - MaineCare paid for everything and still does 18 months later.  MaineCare is going through several changes right now so I would suggest calling and finding out if they will cover it or not and get the person's name and extension.  Better yet ask them to put it in writting or record the conversation.  I work with MaineCare every day in my current job and they are making cuts and changing things daily so what they say today may not be so tomorrow. Good luck
