What is this liquid diet that I've heard so many people talking about that they go on before surgery?  My surgery is set for August 27th and my first class on Gastric Bypass is on Friday so I'm really flying by the seat of my pants.  Can someone share the diet with me and why it's neccessary? Is this a particular things that certain surgeons require or is it pretty mainstream in all patients having Gastric bypass? I'd like to get a head start on doing all the things I should be doing since my date will be coming up shortly! Thanks for your help and any information! <3 Darcy

You know what Darcy???  I don't believe Northeast Surgery, requires a liquid diet.  I could eat and drink anything I wanted up until midnight the night before surgery!!!!  I was so HAPPY!!  I really got to enjoy some of the things that I knew I wouldn't be able to have for a while.  Just give the office a call and your surgeons nurse should be able to tell you.  They are great there and they don't make you feel like a bother.  I hope that you are able to enjoy some of your favorite things beforehand as well. "Most" surgeons put you on a liquid diet mainly to shrink your liver and to make it an easier and safer surgery.  Your liver is in front of all the organs that they have to work on.  Hope this helps. I think it is a good idea to do, personally.

Hi Darcy,     Some surgeons have patients do the liquid diet and some don't.  It depends on their personal preference I guess.  My surgeon does require it before GBP.  I'm on my last day of liquids before surgery tomorrow.  For me it was 2 weeks pre-op of 3 Protein Shakes and Clear Liquids (water, jello, clear broth), and today only clear liquids.  My surgeon says that it helps immensely with shrinking your liver, which does make it easier for him to operate and safer for me.  Anything that helps that along is fine by me!       We also have basically the same diet for 2 weeks post-op to help with the healing process.       Your gonna do great!  Your researching and asking questions, which is the best thing you can do to be interactive in your own healthcare.  Good luck!  Talk to you after I'm on my way to the loser's bench!   Blessings, Yvonne

Hey Darcy, Toder, and I am assuming the rest of the Northeast Surgery doctors, do not require a liquid diet. Instead they have you lose 10lbs from the time of your first nut. visit to your first surgeon consult. They do that to shrink your liver instead of having you do the liquid diet thing. Dr. Toder told me that if I gained weight between the time I saw her and my surgery tomorrow it would just make it harder because it would make the size of my liver increase. Hope that helps!
