Thanks. I had the gastric bypass, RNY. I am 6 weeks post op and finally feeling somewhat normal. I'm sure I've lost more than 34 pounds but I don't change it til I get my official weight from the doctor. I go back in 2 weeks, but unofficially, I think I've lost 40 pounds so far.
Glad you are feeling better. What surgery did you have?
Do you know......our founder, Eric Klein, created ObesityHelp back in 1998 and we've been the source of information, support and education for bariatrics since that time.
Do you know.....that ObesityHelp organized and hosted the first ever National Conference for pre-ops, post-ops, and individuals considering weight loss surgery?

Just found the Maryland forum. Anyone out there from the Talbot/Caroline County area? I live in Preston and would love to connect with someone perhaps to walk/support each other. Haven't found any local support groups here.
I had my surgery on 7/31 with Dr. Kligman at University of Maryland - gastric bypass was my choice as I hoped it would help with my diabetes. Still taking some insulin but much, much lower dose. Doing good with following the post op instructions and trying to stay motivated to get in my walking. Most days I get in the 3 mile Leslie Sansone walking video (45 minutes of aerobic). But it takes a lot to get myself up and doing it! Feel good afterwards though. Have done some track walking at our town park and have thought about doing some at the Easton park track.
Hope to hear from some of you!
So funny to hear you say that. Those were my exact sentiments of Dr. Koch. He is not the friendliest person but he appers to be a good Dr..
Does anyone have a provider in Maryland for this service? Did you PCP set up for you, your bariatric surgeon, or did you have to set up the appointment yourself?
I live in Frederick MD but am traveling to Northern VA for surgery so I'm open to location. thanks.
Hi Jess. I was in a very similar situation as you...right down to the relatively low BMI. I was convinced I was going to be self pay in Mexico...and felt pretty comfortable with it. My research had the cost for a VSG ranging $4500-$9500, usually including hotel, meds, etc. Airfare was not included. I personally felt pretty good about several of the surgeons I researched, but my family was a bit worried about Mexico and I was bit worried about follow up care if needed. At my husbands prompting, I pushed more to see if my insurance would cover the procedure. I went for a sleep study and found out I had sleep apnea, along with the bare minimum BMI I think I may qualify (yeah). I just went to my first surgeon visit and will find out in a week or so if Im approved. If not, I'm probably heading off to Mexico.
Regarding self pay in Maryland, I started exploring this myself with Dr. McKenna in Frederick. I was quoted a price for his part and his assistant...but still needed to get pricing for Hospital, anesthesiologist, etc. I think it would be at least $15k-$20K. There was a gentlemen I conferred with who went to NC and I think it was about $12-13k.
I applaud your proactive approach to health and wish you luck. Feel free to friend or PM me if you'd like.
I am just about 10 years out and have started having issues as well. I have been working with a really "brilliant" GI at Washington Hospital Center, but his bedside manner is HORRIBLE! If it weren't for his expertise I would not stay, BUT if you seeking answers (specifically vitamins, blood levels of vitamins, bacteria) he is your guy. His name is Dr. Koch. I also was an endorinologist at WHC who was great too, Jason Wexler. Hope that helps a little!
