Any experience with CareFirst, Self-employed option

I have Self Employed, small group option with CareFirst. They exclude WLS, as they can by law. They are exempt from the Maryland Mandate Has anyone attempted to appeal given the way WLS has become one of the standard treatments for morbid obesity. Likewise, what are the experiences of people who just have individual vs group insurance coverage. Thanks

Hi Brynn, I have carefirst bluechoice as an individual policy and I was approved right away. I have also checked into the small business policy with carefirst and was told by an insurance broker that there are no small business insurance policies in the state of Md. that cover wls. Claire

I was self-pay for the same reason. I never attempted to appeal it, because I was told by several people that there was no way around it.

Thanks for the replies. I will try to get another policy that is better than the CareFirst self-employed but know there will be some exclusions, at least for a while. Meanwhile, I refuse to let this get me down!

I went through all level of appeals and even had an attorney on it. No go. I changed my insurance when enrolment opened up with my employer and was approved in 4 days. I swiched to MAMSI. Because they are an HMO and not a policy owned by employer, they are required to follow state mandate. Good luck.
