Birth Control Options

I am 18 months post-op and I have been on the Patch for over a year. I love it, except for break throughs. I was wondering if other post-ops could offer feedback/experience on other birth control options, i.e., Nuva Ring, Deprovera shots, etc. I know there are mixed opinions on the absorption of birth control pills, but I really just don't want to take the chance. Thanks and any insights, suggestions, experiences are appreciated. Bettina

Bettina, I was on Depo for 5 years came off of it for 2 and have been back on it for almost a year and a half. Before surgery I had very mild break through bleeding every 3 months. Now with the WLS I have had my period more than not it feels like. I had one every weekend in December, and from January 1st til present. It's very light and no cramps etc but it's still there. The Depo has always worked for me, but I am limited on what I can go on. I had DVT from BC pills so anything around that I can't use. I have been checked for Osteoporsis due to Depo's side effects and the RNY's side effects and I am great right now. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Denise

From what I read and heard when I was going through infertility, if you're planning to ever possibly try to concieve, I'd stay away from the depo shots. I've heard from too many women who have had issues even after stopping the injections. Personally I prefer non-hormonal methods. Once I finally get my butt back to the Ob/Gyn I'm going to try to get the non-hormonal IUD. I had been on BC for 14 years. Then went off when we decided to get pregnant. OMG, I couldn't believe the difference. My mood improved (less mood swings), I actually wanted to have sex (A plus when you're trying to concieve), my periods were normal and predictable. I hate being back on hormonal BC.

I have the Mirena IUD. I haven't had to deal with no monthly visitor for 2 years now. I love it. PS I got mine for other medical conditions.
