Hi all, I wanted to know if anyone can verify that the more protein you are able to take in daily than this greatly reduces the amount of hair loss? My hair is sooooo very thin to begin with I would love to be able to keep what I have. So does anyone know about this? Thanks

I have heard so many things. But, yes, extra protein will help to some degree, but it is very individual as to how much it helps. I will say this, it wont hurt to up your protein intake and will help with other things as well. Good luck, Keetara

From my own personal experience, when I increased my protein intake the hair loss stopped. I was doing about 70 grms of protein back then and increased it to 80 - 100grams. I'm now 7 months post op and I try to get in just over 100 a day. I consistenly drop the weight and am a firm believer that protein plays a major role in that along with exercise and following the rest of the pouch rules.

Let's hope and pray that the more protein...the less hair loss. I was told that I needed 63 gms of protein a day. I have tried to do at least 80 to 100 per day...for fear of hair loss. Although I am losing pounds and inches... I don't.... let me repeat that... I DON'T want to lose hair!!! Needless to say, I am proteining it daily...

Hey Daniel - If you were going to start to have any hair loss it probably would be right around now. Keeping my fingers crossed for ya! Keep that protein up! That is great that you are already getting in that much protein.

Hi Donna, I am 19 months out, 130 lbs gone forever, and at goal. On the hair loss issue....I was very aware of my protein intake at all times...my nutrionists goal was 75 grams and it was a rare day that I did not surpass that goal...my point...I got in all my protein, was a very quick loser, at least at first, and my hair started falling out at the 3rd month and didn't stop until approx the 9th month...granted it did slow up the futher out I got...also, I have always taken my vitamins, extra biotin, etc...you get the idea... While I do believe that some external factors can help (or hurt), your body is going to do what it thinks it needs to do...with WLS, basically your body is going through a type of starvation....overnight...the body panics and starts conserving whatever it can to survive....while hair makes me look better, my body thinks there are more important parts to worry with.... So, my two-cents, and that is probably what it is worth....get in your protein, take your vitamins and if your hair starts to fall out, don't beat yourself up about it and don't let anyone else give you a guilt trip....beyond getting in your protein and vitamins, it is an inner battle between your body, brain and organs....your "mind" is on the sidelines... Best wishes to you.... RAE

Like any major surgery you will probably lose some hair. I am told it is because of what they use to put us asleep. It is a fact that your body will "suck" protein from easy sources if it needs to ie Hair nails etc I started losing hair about month 4 and started nioxin products with the increased protien...seemed to work but not sure which one did it. I can tell you that at 2 years out and 170 pounds lighter I will get more hair on my comb if I dont keep my protein up. Ofcvourse it is an individual thing Best of luck Diana
