Nutritionists?

Please offer any suggestions/recommendations on nutritionists in the Annapolis/Baltimore/Washington area. I did receive 1 recommendation (Charlotte Gollobin) already, but would like to have more than 1 to choose from. I will be paying for the visits totally myself because my insurance does not cover these visits, so I would like to find a good match for me personally. Also, I am looking for someone that helps with long-term issues with food and not just managing the period from 6 months to 1 year after surgery. Thanks! SueZ

I have met with one or two very good nutritionists over at the Joslin Diabetes Center @ North Arundel Hospital in Glen Burnie. They also run good classes periodically on Diabetes Nutrition (which in my opinion really just taught me how a normal person is supposed to eat.) http://www.umm.edu/joslindiabetes/jos_education.html -- here's a list of courses anyone can take I believe.

Thanks for the suggestion. Do you know if they are also experienced with WLS patients? Before surgery, I did speak to a nutritionist for diabetic teaching through the military hospital. She and one other nutritionist there did not have a clue about how to help with the WLS issues, especially postop diet at different stages. It is probably worth a try, though, and I appreciate the suggestion. North Arundel Hospital is fairly close to my home and would be convenient Thanks again. SueZ

I met with Arlene Swantko. She was knowledgeable and easy to talk to. She's authored a book entitled "What Can I Eat?" Her consultation fee was $150 and that includes follow up visits/telephone help. She has offices in Catonsville and Columbia (and I think Owings Mills). Her number is: 410-302-2187

Thanks, Terry. I do know Arlene. In fact, she is the nutritionist I have seen so far. Dr. Averbach did my surgery and my nutritionist fee covered her services up to 6 months postop. She is available quite often by phone, but only once when I have had postop visits with Dr. Averbach. (She is usually in another office when Dr. Averbach has his appointments). I will probably end up speaking with her again, and certainly have not had bad advice from her. I have just needed more advice. All along (and especially now), I have needed more structure and more black and white instructions for being successful with my diet. Most of my surgery buddies are told a limit of portion sizes or calories or carbs, etc. I do not have any problems with ANY food that I eat (no dumping, etc) and I have always been able to eat a lot more food than anyone else I speak to. I really have to work to not overeat as I hardly ever seem to get full. Don't get me wrong, I have been fairly successful with my weight loss, but it is only because of the diet advice others have given me that they received from their nutritionists. Thanks for mentioning her. Good luck with your surgery. Dr. Averbach and all of his staff are amazing and wonderful! SueZ
