HELP FINDING A SURGEON--PLEASE!
Haven't had my surgery yet (August 29), but did a lot of research. Dr. Alex Gandsas at Sinai in Baltimore is the BEST! He is my surgeon, and was recommended to me by my PCP when I was considering another surgeon. He holds monthly pre-op seminars on the first Monday of every month, and also holds monthly post-op seminars. He attends almost every one of them himself. His partner is Dr. Christina Li, and I have heard nothing but wonderful things about her as well, but Dr. Gandsas is the director of the program.
Hi Denise,
I am at the same stage as you in the decision making process. So I am also looking into any resource available to narrow my Surgeon selection. I thought you might be interested to know that the Washingtonian magazine had an article on "Top Doctors" in this area (Md, Va and DC) in the July 2005 issue. I think they do this survey article every year about this time. Anyway, Dr Barry Greene was the only WLS surgeon I saw in the article that I have seen mentioned on these boards. This means that other doctors, his peers, selected him as one of the "Top Doctors". But I agree with one of the earlier responses, you have to find a great surgeon, great after-care program and they have to be a doctor whom you wouldn't mind dealing with for the next however many years. Finding that "right fit" is so important. I also live in Bowie and it seems like all the doctors I've looked into are at least a 1/2 hr or more ride away. I don't mind it for the surgery, heck if he/she is good I'd cross state lines more than once! But for the after-care I'd like something not too far away since most meetings are just at the tail end of rush hour. I also have two little ones and I don't want to take time away from them in travel time once or twice a month. That seems silly, I could probably use the break!
Good Luck in you decision making. If you'd like to share more info or just talk, send me an e-mail.
Take care,
Sue
Hi all
I live in Southern Maryland and spent over a year researching Surgeons.
I decided on Dr. Fred brody from GW University in DC. As a nurse I was impressed with his resume. (He started the Bariatrics program at Cleveland Clinic so I figured he HAD to be good) then a surgeon I work with (from the military) asked if I was going to see Dr. Brody--when I said yes she told me he was the best. And about GW, I can't say a thing bad about them, I did not encounter even 1 rude person, the nurses were great as were the residents, med students and fellows.
Dr. Brody's number is 202-741-2587
Best Wishes and Good Luck
