Carpal Tunnel and WLS

Has anyone had Carpal Tunnel before WLS and did it resolve, or get better, after having had WLS and losing weight. I'm trying to decide whether to have surgery for my carpal tunnel or tough it out until wls? I had my son almost 2 yrs ago and since then my hands swell on and off and even if they aren't swollen there are some symptoms. Maybe if I were to lose some weight the carpal tunnel will get better? Thanks for any input. Sue

I had carpal tunnel both as a thin and fat adult. I still have it now. My index finger and thumb go numb at times and my wrist swells. If I type too long or use a standard mouse --it gets worse. But if I use an ergo-nomic keyboard and mouse the pain will start to diminish. The track ball mouse is my fav. Have you talked to your doctor about it? However since the pain does originate from the neck, WLS may help.... http://www.carpaltunnelsite.com/portal/obesity-and-carpal-tunnel-syndrome.html http://www.tifaq.com/articles/carpal_tunnel_syndrome-sep98-well-connected.html Melanie http://www.umm.edu/patiented/doc34full.html

Hi Melanie, Thanks for the web sites! Got some good info and avenues to use. I did talk to my Dr recently and she advised WLS would probably help since the added tissue and fluids can put pressure on the nerves. I hope weight loss helps! Thanks again for your help! Sue

I had CP prior to wls and it has not resolved. Frankly, i don't expect it to resolve because I don't think CP is affected by weight.

Hi FFF Chick, I talked to my Dr recently and she said weight loss would probably help! Sorry to hear yours isn't any better but maybe down the road a bit it will improve and you won't suffer as much or at all. Thanks for the info and best wishes for your journey. Take Care. Sue

I know several thin people who have it. I don't think it will be affected by weight loss. General joint pain and arthritis may be relieved at various degrees, if I understand correctly.
