Has anyone else had a problem with severe pain on the right side after laporascopic rny? I'm in my 3rd week post-op and the pain is still severe. My surgeon thinks it is a pulled or torn ligament in my abdomen. (I may have also re-injured the area with a sneezing fit). If this has happened to anyone else, how long did the pain last for you?

My surgery was 6/8/05 and I also had sharp severe pain in my right side. It turned out to be my gall bladder acting up. My surgeon put me on Actigal and advised me to be sure to take in at least 15gm of fat each day as this is the minimum required for your gall bladder to function properly. Within 3 days, the pain was gone!! You may want to have him check to see if this may be a problem for you as well... the pain went from just below my rib cage to below my belly button on the right, and I thought it was a pulled muscle. Thanks for the info. Fortunately, I had my gall bladder removed several years ago, thus eliminating that possibility. The pain is on the lower right side, just adjacent to my hip bone. It doesn't hurt when I am sitting still or laying down - it only hurts when I'm on my feet, or changing positions, which tends to make me believe that a pulled ligament is probably correct. I have no fever, nausea, or other side effects. My problem is that the pain, when it occurs, is so severe that I literally cannot straighten up, and, of course, it is making it impossible for me to start exercising. As I've never pulled a ligament in my abdomen before, I wish I knew how long to expect it to be like this. Ellen

I did as well but it was my gall bladder. It really acted up after surgery but now it has been quiet. Has he done any testing on you yet to confirm what the issue is? I had an Ultrasound pre-op that showed no problems. Then post op I had an X-ray, then a Cat Scan, and bloodwork that showed no issues. Eventually they found that my gall bladder was inflamed and that I had a motility issue with a specialized Nuclear Medicine Scan called a HIDA/CCK. For now I am in the clear. I have not had any pain in a few weeks. If I get any severe pain again my surgeon will remove it. When I was in pain I actually put ice packs on that area. I also used my pain meds and eventually tylenol to also control it. Keeping my food choices very, very low fat seems to have keep it under control.

It looks like the pulled/torn ligament theory is correct. The pain is finally starting to lessen, and I can more around much more easily. I just find it totally frustrating that all this pain and suffering really had nothing at all to do with the surgery itself. My only problem lately has been a failed attempt to eat a piece of banana the other day. Sent me straight to vomit-city. I spent the rest of the afternoon spitting up foam as if I were suffering from rabies. I won't be trying banana again for a LONG time.
