I would appreciate anyones help with a personal insurance policy. I have insurance through my husbands job and it has an exclusion(MAMSI) because of being a small company. I tried to get insurance through my job (opt Ch) but they have an exclusion too. I need help finding an insurance company that will cover surgery and will give an indidvidual policy. I know it will be pricey, but I will try anything that will help me get the surgery. Any help would be apppreciated. I live in Maryland and work in Virginia if that is any help Thanks Cathy

I wonder if the premiums come out to less than paying off a 3 or 4 year loan...

You could try Carefirst but I tried that route and they denied me because I was overweight......(Not worth the effort to see those words in print in my book)

They denied you complete insurance? Or, please tell me that wasn't the excuse for denying WLS...

I currently work for a large engineering company so you would think we would have good insurance....WRONG....while we do have a PPO...the insurance is self-funded...so while the state of Maryland says large companies have to treat a medical condition...Our company laughs in their face and says tough were self funded... We don't have to follow your stinking rules...we're not going to pay for you to lose weight... You're lucky we let you pay us outrageous premiums for nothing coverage.... OK, so I think my husbands new company has MAMSI...I could wait the 6 months and accept the slight increase pay more money in premiums....WRONG....Small Business exclusion Then I try to apply to carefirst for individual coverage. It would have had co-pays but at least it would have been covered. Well they waited 4 or 5 weeks after I applied and then came the dreaded LETTER.. I am going to paraphrase the letter because I pretty sure I shredded or chucked it at the time but it basically said "we're sorry...your too fat for us to even consider insuring you." I believe it mentioned BMI and everything. Some help...(just kick me already) I'm sorry if I sound down....it's been a rough week.... I'm trying to stay positive but I just found out the surgeon I wanted won't help/deal with someone with an exclusion. I thought about self pay, but then I read that other thread today where the hospital alone charged $87,000..... (we might be lucky enough to remortgage and get $25k but if it were higher...we'd be in trouble and I don't think I could live with that.)

What is you BMI? Do you have comorbidities? I applied for Carefirst today I guess I will wait to see what they say. My BMI is 43.3 and I have sleep apnea Cathy

It's a little higher than yours..... As for the application part...If you told them about your apnea..they'll probably deny for that too...

I have Carefirst BC/BS for small group. My husband is self-employed. We had to get it when it was open enrollment due to my height/weight ratio. They do not cover it. I tried to get Mamsi, recently and was told that it would cover for self-employed/small group, but that I had to apply to regular underwriters first. I was denied for same reasons. I was told that I could go for open enrollment in December, but now I am told Maryland law will change in Oct. and there will be no open enrollment for self-employed. So, I will have to be self-pay if I want this surgery done. I wish you much luck finding insurance to cover you.
